Windows Updates Won't Automatically Download After XP Repair Insta

After running a Window XP Repair/Install, Windows Update (WU) won't download
updates automatically.

Specifically, I've set up my WU download selection to "Download updates for
me, but let me choose when to install them."

Although the yellow Notification Icon appears in the system tray, the
mouse-over message reads: "Downloading updates: 0%", and never goes any
further.

After approximately 60-90 seconds, the icon disappears from the tray without
ever prompting me with the "Updates are ready to install" message that I've
become accustomed to seeing.

Please note: After my XP Repair Install, I was able to use MS Update to
manually download and install Windows Updates (after re-registering the
wuapi, wuweb, atl, wups2, wuaueng1, wups, MSXML3, wucltui, and wuaueng DLLs)
with no problem

However, I purposely did not manually download a few of the more recent
Windows Updates to test the "Download, but let me install" setting and make
sure it was working properly -- which it isn't.

Any suggestions? Or will this situation correct itself as "future" updates
are issued?

Re: Windows Updates Won't Automatically Download After XP Repair Insta

Absent any Errors in your windowsupdate.log, you may be seeing a delay
caused by excessive demand on the servers. It can take up to 7 days for all
Automatic Update users to get new updates when so many have been released.
(Since WinXP SP3 was released to Automatic Update earlier this month, it
could take longer than that!)

You can try downloading/installing the updates via Windows/Microsoft Update:
Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates users
further back in the queue (which may explain, at least in part, why
Automatic Updates hasn't brought them in for you yet).

Re: Windows Updates Won't Automatically Download After XP Repair Insta

Thanks for the quick response, PA Bear.

I did not realiize that excessive server demands could result in such
lenghty delays before updates are delivered -- particularly since the initial
notification in the system tray was almost instantaneous. I just assumed the
worst when the download timed out at 0%, and the updates weren't delivered.

I also didn't realize that manual WU download requests via MS Update jump to
the top of the queue -- ahead of automatic WU update requests. Interesting!

YW. If you see "Update is not allowed to download due to regulation" errors
in your WindowsUpdate.log, the servers are too busy so AU will try again
later.

Bingo!

I found several instances of "Update is not allowed to download due to
regulation" error messages in my WindowsUpdate.log.

I've been searching these forums for an answer to this problem with no luck
-- until now!

Thanks for all your help, PA Bear! You're the Best!
