I need to free up some room on the c: drive of a Windows 2003 SP1 DNS Server
so I can add some Windows Updates. (It was built a few years ago w/a 4GB c:
partition and I have 311MB left. I do have 9GB free on the e: partition.) I
noticed that the c:\Winnt\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder is taking up
1.2GB. Can I delete this folder safely, or move it to the e: partition w/o
breaking anything? How about the c:\winnt\ServicePackFiles folder. Can I
move, delete, or empty that one?
Thanks.

Hello Paul P-L,

Run diskcleanup utility first. Also you can delete the complete Softwaredistribution
folder without any problem, only used during the update. To delete it stop
the Automatic update service, delete it and start the automatic update service
again. The folder structure will be recreated but is now empty. You can also
delete the KBxxxxxx folders, but then you can not uninstall the patch where
it is related to. If you have no problem with this, it's fine to delete them,
minimum folder to keep is th $hfmig$. If you are not sure about deleting
them you can also move them to another location and if you need to uninstall
one just copy it back to the default location.
