As a new network admin in our small organization I am trying to understand
the licensing and the license manager I have inherited. Now we are about to
add two new servers to the domain. From what I understand about licensing,
we shouldn't have to purchase any more if we make all of ours per server,
because we already have enough for each user that could connect
simultaneously.
Here's my confusion: I go into Admin Tools\licensing…server browser… SV3
(the PDC) says 50 per server CALs purchased. But in the main window under
product view it says the following:
licensing mode Per seat Per Seat Per Svr Per
Svr
(per server) purchased Allocated Purchased
Reached
SV3 win2k 50 1195 75 230
76
sp4
Why does it say 1195 per seat purchased, etc.; is this referring to all the
servers? If I look at each server in server browser at "per server for :XX
concurrent connections" these numbers do not add up to 1195 per seat, so
what gives here? Am I missing something?
On my Win 2003 R2 sp2 SV4 it says 45 per server CALs purchased in server
browser. In the main license window it says:
licensing mode Per seat Per Seat Per Svr
Per Svr
(per server) purchased Allocated Purchased
Reached
SV4 2003 45 0 0
45 -31
R2 SP2 Ent
Does this mean that this individual server is giving out more licenses than
it has, and if so, why aren't some licenses being taken from other servers?
They all point to the same license server, which is SV2. All servers are on
the same subnet except for SV5.
How can I get all these in synch? I want to make sure our two new servers
don't add to our confusion.

Thanks so much to anyone who can help me understand this.
