Join hyper-v server to domain?

I have a 2008 Server running the Hyper-V role with a bunch of VMs
running. I had not planned on joining this virtual server to my
domain, but I would like to do so now. Will my VMs be affected if I
join this server to my domain?

Thanks,

Mike

The question doesn't make any sense as it stands. You talk about a
virtual server and vms as it they were different. vm is just an abbreviation
for virtual machine. Do you mean that you are considering joining the
machine which hosts your vms to a domain?

Re: Join hyper-v server to domain?

I'm sorry if I confused the terminology. I was referring to the host
server running hyper-v as the "virtual server" and the guests as
"VMs". Yes, you did understand my question correctly. I was concerned
that hyper-v might run the VMs under a particular account, that could
be affected by joining it to a domain. This is a production server, so
I figured it couldn't hurt to ask before I did it. I guessed that it
would be okay, but I also didn't want to assume anything. :)

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Join hyper-v server to domain?

The main problem I can think of will be with authentication. If you have
set things up on a standalone server you will be using a local user account.
If you make your server a member of your domain you will be logging in to
the domain with a domain user account.

When you try to open the Hyper-V management console it might complain
that you are not authorized to do so.

Re: Join hyper-v server to domain?

That's the type of thing I was concerned with. I can pretty easily
setup a test hyper-v server as a standalone, setup some VMs on it, and
then join it to the domain to see what happens. I think I'll go that
route. Thanks for your input.
