Hi everybody,

is there a way to access VHD Files (2008 64Bit backup files) without
restoring the whole drive? Can they be mounted as drives? If not on the host
system, can I try on a virtual machine?

Thanks for your time

Ole

Hello Ole,

From:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc462796(TechNet.10).aspx

You can actually take a backup image and mount it as a volume in a virtual
machine running under Microsoft Virtual Server 2005. You can simply mount
the VHDs in a virtual machine and browse for a particular file rather than
having to perform test restores of tapes to see which one has the file is
on it. (A note of caution: you can't take a backup image and boot a virtual
machine from it. Since the backed-up hardware configuration doesn't correspond
to the virtual machine's configuration, you can't use Windows Server Backup
as a physical-to-virtual migration tool.)

Re: Mounting VHD Files

Hi Meinolf,

thanks for your quick response.

As I pointed out in my first posting, I am running Server2008. Does this OS
not have the capability to mount VHD itself? Do I have to work around it
with Hyper-V VMs?

VirtualServer2005 only makes sense on Server2003 as 2008 comes with Hyper-V,
right?

Re: Mounting VHD Files

Hello Ole,

Maybe this also works on 2008:
http://coolthingoftheday.blogspot.com/2008/01/tell-me-vhdmount-story-installing-just.html

But Virtual server 2005 R2 SP1 with Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1
Update will also work together with server 2008.

Best regards

Re: Mounting VHD Files

Have you tried mounting it as an extra vhd to a vm running under Hyper-V?
Did it work? If not, what problems did you have?
