Service Pack 2 Error

I have the common "Access is denied" error from attempting to install SP2.
See, uninstalled it today after having problems of installing IE7 thinking
that if I were to reinstall SP2, I'd have IE7 by default. Well, I've been at
the computer for hours, trying to follow the tutorial that Microsoft has
about this "Acess is denied" error and how to fix it, but it has gotten me
nowhere. I don't know what else to do. Though, I think it has to do something
with the registry.

Can I delete something off the registry from the past time that I had
installed SP2?

What could another problem me that is prompting the "Access is denied" error.

Yesterday, the automatic update feature downloaded and installed the Service
Pak for XP Professional x64 on my Dell Precision 690 computer. It took it a
long time to install, and now, when I try to boot, 80% of the time or more,
the computer never finishes booting. It stops with the hourglass showing
when you put it over start and some of the icons on the desktop are not fully
installed. The only thing I have been able to do it unplug the computer and
try again. About one time in four, it comes up.

How do I get this update off my computer? -- Pat

What kind of install CD do you have? Sometimes, the easiest way to install
SP2 is to slipstream it to your install CD, then do a repair install.
However - with some OEM CDs, such as many Dell CDs, this can't work because
other updates have been added.

In the worst case, you back up, do a clean install, install basic drivers,
and then install SP2 and all updates before anything else.

First make sure your machine is clean from malware and viruses then try the
installation of SP2.
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

It's not really a good idea to piggyback on other unrelated posts.

Have you contacted Dell? There may be a hardware issue.

I haven't yet contacted Dell.

This just started when the update came down. Now all I want to do is get
rid of it. I have an important project that I must get out in the next few
days, and I don't want to deal with this service pak. Can I just remove the
service pak?

Alright, I think I've tried every bit of information you guys have given me,
and still no luck. Any other stratagies?

As for a SP2 CD, I do not have one. My Dad does, but he has a Dell computer
and that's what that CD is for.

I have also tried installing SP2 through a different admin account, and that
still did not solve anything.

Yes, I have referred to that tutorial numerous times. That has not gotten me
anywhere. What I would like to know and try though, is finding ANYTHING that
is related to Service Pack 2 in the registry..would it be possible if I found
these files and deleted them from the registry. I have a distinct feeling
that the reason I'm having these problems is having to do somewhere with the
registry. So if anyone knows of what files I could delete from the registry
that is related to SP2, please let me know. Thanks.

Did you follow the three steps? What was the outcome for each of the
steps? These steps directly address registry settings.

Do you have IE7? If so, are you able to revert to IE6?

I do not have IE7...that was one of the reasons why I am needing to install
SP2, hoping that Internet Explorer 7 will come with the service pack. I will
attempt these three steps again.

Hey, would it be possible if I could just delete the registry files mentioned
on that one Microsoft tutorial and on another link off of a blog that is
mentioned above this message on this post? Could that fix everything?

What do you guys think of what I have thought of below of deleting the
registry files? Is it a good idea? Would that clear everything related to SP2?
