Unable move file: Error copying files

[SANTANDER]

I am almost out of space on hard drive, and tried move file from hard disk
to removable drive(USB Flash drive 4GB). The small size files has been moved
normally. When I moved 465MB size file, it taken almost 15 min. But when
tried to move 2.46GB file, got "Error copying files" - "Cannnot create or
replace Filename: The parameter is incorect". Where is problem?

P.s. when move big Gigabytes files from C:\ drive to removable drive, will
this cause heavy disk C: fragmentation?

How namy time may take to move 2.46GB file?

I am sure that there must be a Microsoft Technet article on this but I have

1. Is there still plenty of room on the flash drive?

2. Can you COPY (not Move) the file to another folder on your machine?

3. What kind of file is it? Please be precise. What program created it and
what settings were used, if you know.

First, what is the format of the USB flash drive? I would guess FAT32.
FAT32 is limited to files no larger than 4 Gig, so 2.46 Gig should fit.

But, FAT16 has a limit of only 2 Gig per file (or really more like 2 Gig per
partition). Any chance that the USB drive has two partitions of size 2 Gig,
or worse, one parition of size 2 Gig? Try right-click in windows explorer,
properties, and check size.

You might also want to run SCANDISK on the USB drive, to be assured that the
file system is OK. In fact, you might want to start over by formatting the
USB drive, to be sure that it one 4 Gig parition of FAT32.

Moving one or files off of a drive does not cause fragmentation on that
drive. It does opens free space on the drive, which could then be used as
"breathing room" to enable defrag to work.

Now solved this issue myself. As have read, that was Windows 98 bug, system
unable correctly handle files more than 2GB size. So, I tried move file to
flash drive via DOS command as suggested in most notes. Flash drive is 4GB,
and it was almost empty.
First I tried MOVE file via windows 'drag and drop' method, but this not
worked for me. Then I tried move via DOS 'move' command, but this not worked
again, DOS showed note that it can no open file, it seems. I tried 'Copy'
command - and it worked, so I was able copy file:

copy c:\folder name\filename e:\folder name

File is .iso image, 2.46GB, it has spaces in file name, so I removed spaces
before using DOS.
I was able move to flash drive(use drag and drop) folder, consisting of 50
symbols, include 6 spaces in file name, it has been moved without problem. I
renamed the folder by replacing the space characters with an underscore,
since I should specify the folder name in DOS command.

Windows 98 support only USB 1.1 protocol, so transfer 2.46GB file size was
extremely slow. All this time, few hours, flash drive LED was constantly
blinking. Can this cause damaging the flash drive? Since it probably not
designed to work under constant overload mode.

Glad you got it going. And you'll find out if it was too much work for the
flash drive when you're done, <s>.

Seriously, what's the difference in copying a single 2.3 GB file and copying
2300 100Mb files? The thing is intended to move files from one place to
another and should be designed to easily handle whatever it's capacity in a
single copy procedure, whatever it's nature. If the drive can't handle it,
you didn't pay enough. Slower speed should actually lessen the impact, I
should think. Main thing to worry about is heat, and slower speed means less
heat, usually, just over a longer period time. I'm thinking the trade-off is
about even.

FYI, Windows 98 at least Windows 98 Second Edition supports USB 2.x via third
party solutions but is not natively supported by Microsoft which you
correctly stated supports USB 1.1.
