I'm not talking about the Windows dialog box that pops up when you put in a
CD. That dialog box can be disabled by right clicking the drive icon in
Windows Explorer. There is an 'auto play' tab where it can be disabled.

OK. I'm not talking about that dialog box. But many CDs have an 'auto run'
feature. When you put the CD in it displays it's own menu on the screen. Is
there a setting somewhere that will stop the disk's auto run feature. I
mean: can I make the PC do nothing ? Just like when I put in a floppy.
When I put in a floppy disk the PC doesn't ask questions. It doesn't do
anything with the floppy disk until I tell tell it to look at the floppy.
Can the PC be set up to treat a CD this way also ?

TIA

Try Power Toy's Tweak UI from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Install, run and expand as follows: 'My Computer', 'Auto Play', 'Types'
check the option to disable this feature from removable drives.

One of the easiest ways to manipulate auto-run for a drive is to
install Tweak UI for XP. Grab it here:

The manual method is to just hold down the Shift key until you see the
drivelight go off and come back on for a moment.
When the light goes out the second time, release the Shift key.

Start--My computer--right click CD--choose properties---auto play
tab---select an action to perform--set take no action.
