Hello,
I have a share and for some odd reason when I set permissions on the
folder they did not propagate down. This is probably 2-3 tiers down.
Any reason why? Any reason on how to solve this?
Thanks

You need to turn on inheritance for the parent folder.

Re: Permissions

I did that but its not being propagated through the rest of the folder
with changes I have made. So if we have a folder labeled test. Test
says I can r/w/e, but 2 folders down I am not there with those
permissions, thats my problem.

Re: Permissions

You have to tick the box "Replace permission entries on all child
objects" after turning on inheritance.

Are you talking about Share permissions or NTFS permissions?

Infinite Diversities in Infinite Combinationsdo not propagate. NTFS do.

Re: Permissions

I am sharing a folder out with permissions that people on the domain
can access that folder. Does that explain it better?

Re: Permissions

It does not really answer Ace's question: Are you referring to
NTFS permissions (visible under the "Security" tab) or are you
talking about Share permissions (visible under "Sharing" tab)?

Re: Permissions

Oh sorry that was my confusion. I was under Security tab that I was
adding the group to R/W/E and changing all the other users to read.
Thanks

Thank you. So you're saying that when you for instance, under the Security
tab, add a user, change the permissions, the user doesn't get propagated
down to the child folders? And you've already stated that under the Advanced
button, prior to creating the user account, the "Allow inheritable
permissions from the parent to propagate to this object and all child
objects. Include these with entries..." already checked on the folder you
are adding the permissions and the child folders too?

These settings are default. When you have a parent-child or children folder
structure, any user you add at a parent level, any level, will propagate
downhill by default. The child will show the permissions checkbox
grayed-out, indicative it is an inherited permission. You can add to it, but
not change the grayed-out one unless you uncheck allow inheritance.

Now if you are saying your are NOT seeing this default behavior, then we've
got a problem unless the child folders prior to adding the user to the
parent, were previously unchecked to allow inheritance.

What errors are you seeing in the Event log? Is this a domain controller or
a member server? If this is a member server, post the Event log errors of
the member server and from your domain controller, please. Proivde the
EventID# and Source names, please.
