Hi
we're a small firm with 60 users. We're moving to a new environment, so we
decided to buy Win2008 Server Standard + Exchange 2007 Standard.
We will not wait for SBS 2008 since it will come out in November, since we
need to move to a new environment till September, so the only option is to
buy full products.
My plan is the following:
- buy a new server to run Windows 2008 Standard (member server) with
Exchange 2007
* **I'm thinking of a HP DL360 1xQuadCore 8GB RAM 2x146GB SAS in RAID1
- buy a new server to use it for Windows 2008 AD + File + APP server
* **I'm thinkig of a HP DL380 1xQuadCore 4GB RAM 4x146GB SAS in RAID5 or
- use an existing server for a second Windows 2008 DC, just buy a Win2008
Std licence

We are very limited with our budget, so I need to find optimal solution. Any
recommendations about hardware configuration?
Thanks!
Regards,
Miha

The 380 would be the way to go. Memory would want to be at least the
4GB. The 380 because you can have 4, or six dislks that you will place
into two or three mirrors. No RAID5. Separate the OS, Logs and Stores.
The 360 wouldn't be much of a cost difference so go with the 380.

Re: Hardware configuration

Hello Mha,

If you buy DL 360 G5 versions from HP they can also have up to 6 disks, i
have them in use and they are 1U high instead of 2U. Also the DL 380 G5 can
have up to 8 disks.

Re: Hardware configuration

Thanks, but I'll go for DL380 G5, it's almost the same price like DL360.

Re: Hardware configuration

Note that even if you seperate logs/databases onto individual RAID1 arrays,
the IO still goes over the same SCSI bus so it buys you very little in the
way of performance.

I would do a raid 5 with spare and be done with it. With 60 users, the disk
will sit idle 99% of the time anyway.
