Hi

On my DC and Fileserver. All files have the read only attribute set. Nobody
in the IT dept. did anything... or so they say.

The file attribute has been inherite from above the root drives on the
server.

Ex. files in the root of drive D:\ has the file attribute Read Only marked
and grayed out. So I can't unmark it.

How can this happen? And how do I solve it?

Are you looking at the properties for a folder or individual files. The Read
Only attribute is not used for folders and shows up as Read Only grayed out.
This is perfectly normal and ignored by Windows. If you are checking the
folders try checking individual files in the folders.

All the files had the read only attribute set. for some unknown reason,
(why?) I removed the read only attribute on all files by checking and
unchecking the the read only attribute field on every foluder in the root of
every drive.

End users reported that everything was back to normal.

But how can this happen in the first place??

By doing the opposite, set the check mark and applying it. I once did this
accidently many years ago when I first noticed that folders appeared to be
marked Read Only. Playing with the check mark I accidently set everything on
the drive to Read Only.
