Must W2003 BACKUP utility use the Floppy Drive.

It seems the floppy drive A is not working.

I get "No ID address mark was found on the floppy disk" whenever I put a
floppy in. This problem was discovered when I did a FULL BACKUP using the
BACKUP utiliyt in W2003.

So, does BACKUP have to use the floppy or can it write its files to CD.
OR is there a good backup utility on the market that does not cost $1000
just becasue it's used on a server. (the server is a very simple setup and
has 5 users on 1 app thru Terminal Services).

I am loath to open the guts of the server and install another floppy - or am
I being too cautious?
OR
Is there a setting on W2003 to tell it to use the floppy or something like
that.

I've never seen NTBackup insist on a floppy - many servers don't have floppy
drives nowadays. Not sure why you're putting a floppy in there - you most
certainly can't run a server backup to one.

You can get a few inexpensive USB or eSATA drives to do backups if you
can't swing a tape drive.

After the full system backup to say an external hard drive the Backup utility
writes asr.sif, asrpnp.sif and setup.log to a floppy which is used by the
Automatic System Recovery.

Re: Must W2003 BACKUP utility use the Floppy Drive.

Hello ThomasAJ,

Have a look here:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windo...25f6-468f-a857-19bc23eca2981033.mspx?mfr=true

From
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windo...cc90-4b52-b6ab-064f9db8d2721033.mspx?mfr=true

You normally access the ASR state file (Asr.sif) through a local floppy disk
drive. If the computer does not have a floppy disk drive, or you want to
perform an ASR restore over a network or remotely, you can use a Remote Installation
Services (RIS) server to fully automate the ASR process. RIS uses Pre-boot
eXecution Environment (PXE) technology to enable client computers without
an operating system to boot remotely to a RIS server that performs installation
of a supported operating system over a TCP/IP network connection. Consequently,
the remote installation client computer must have a PXE-enabled network adapter.

No...that doesn't happen if you haven't told the system to run an ASR
backup.
See Meinolf's reply for more info.
