64bit HOST

Just want to be very sure.

If i buy a 64 BIT physical host machine, can i :

a) install 32 bit microsoft server 2003 / 2008 into a 64 bit host without
virtualisation ?
b) use microsoft hypervisor 64 bit on this host and run 32 and 64 bit GUESTS
?

a) Yes, you can run a 32-bit OS on 64-bit hardware.

b) Hyper-V can run both 32-bit and 64-bit guests. Hyper-V must run on Server
2008 x64 with Hyper-V. (It is possible to purchase Server 2008 without the
Hyper-V option. Not surprisingly this will not run the Hyper-V role).

32bit OS will install on 64bit hardware.

Also yes, Hyper-v can run both versions as guest. Only Hyper-V has to be
installed on 64bit hardware.

One more question

1. If 64 bit server is the way to go, why do manufacturer still built 32 bit
machines ?

Hello IT,

Look around and you will see that 64bit is coming now more and more. But
the question you have to ask the manufacturers. And most of the new server
hardware is 64bit.
