SP3 and Norton on new computer

I just received my new Dell notebook computer with Windows XP Pro and SP2
installed, and I want to update to SP3. The computer came with no antivirus
program. I use Norton Internet Security 2008 on my other computer and am
allowed to install it on up to three computers. However, I recall reading
that there can be a problem when SP3 is installed on computers already
running any of the 2008 Norton antivirus programs. Would it be risky to
download and install SP3 before I have an antivirus program on the computer?
If so, I'll consider ordering a CD of SP3.

Numerous registry keys are added when you upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack
3 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 with a Norton product installed. Because of
these registry keys, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
Windows Device Manager is empty
Missing Wireless network adaptors or other hardware devices
Unable to connect using a wireless adapter
During the upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista Service
Pack 1, a tool called Fixccs.exe creates a series of registry keys in many
locations (some of them within the Symantec registry keys) but is unable to
remove them.
Symantec has developed a tool to remove the registry entries that were added
during the Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista SP 1 upgrade. Download
and run the tool to automatically remove the registry entries.

If you have been offered WinXP SP3 via WU (Wait until you're offered it -
that way you know the computer is ready for WinXP SP3) - you can always
download the full file if you didn't wish to wait for the CD.

Before You Connect a New Computer to the Internet

Your new machine most likely has a free-trial of some anti-virus or security
suite application installed. If so, leave it be until you've gotten SP3 and
then any criticial security updates installed. If not, your first order of
business is to (1) make sure the Windows Firewall is enabled and then (2)
get an functional anti-virus application installed and properly configured.
Then get your machine fully patched at Windows Update before doing ANYTHING
else online (e.g., browsing; email; chat; other downloads/installs).

Later on, if you choose not to subscribe to the free-trial AV app or
security suite, you should (1) uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs, (2) run
the appropriate Removal Tool, if necessary (cf.
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=33665), and then (3) install the
replacement application.

Thank you, TaurArian! I couldn't remember what the problems with Norton
were. Good to know. And thank you for the suggestion that I wait for WU to
offer me the updates.

NO. Robear's is telling you to install an antivirus prior to connecting
the system to the internet.
Frankly speaking, I would NOT install Norton on any Windows OS, but
that's your choice.

Do NOT install Norton prior to SP3 being offered from either Automatic
or Windows|Microsoft updates.

Either use the Windows Update link on the Start Menu or open IE, click
Tools, Windows Update to see if SP3 is offered.
* Install all offered updates EXCEPT SP3 *

If SP3 is offered, then suggest you download the stand-alone package
from here and *save* it:

After SP3 is installed, then install an antivirus.

Free, effective AVs are Avast and AntiVir. Neither effect performance
nor cause issues like other AVs are wont to do.

I'll check them both before I start working with the new computer (a friend
who works for an educational organization says they use NOD32 for their
satellite employees). Should I consider anything else to supplement the
antivirus program, such as antispyware programs?
