I've been plagued by a strange error now for a longish time now. I was hoping
that upgrading to SP3 - which I just did - would help but no luck.

Problem description:
When I enable "Windows Update" the following happens:
- my computer boots OK and the log-in screen appears
- it can sit in login forever
- when I log on with adming rights, about 30 seconds after I start the
login, the machine will crash - every time

Only way I can currently solve the issue is by booting into safe mode and
disabling the Automatic Update service.

When I submitted the error report to MS, the response suggested that the
problem is due to the Sil3112 RAID driver and I should use Windows Update to
fix the problem. Evidently this is not possible as enablign Windows update
will crash the machine :-(.

My config is:
MoBo: GigaByte GA-K8NS Pro, with Sil3112 RAID enabled, XP SP3

So 2 questions:
- Seems strange if Windows update would be the only sw affected by the SiI
driver. I see no other probs and Windows is not on the RAID device? Could
there be something else going on?

- If this is indeed a prob with the driver, how can I get the correct
version of the driver, seeing the I cannot get via Windows Update.

Here is the list of drivers available from Sil:

http://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportsearchresults.aspx?pid=63&cid=3&ctid=2&osid=4&

Any help appreciated!

Do you have all the latest drivers available from this page installed? The
latest firmware?

Harry.

Upgrading in hopes of fixing an existing problem is seldom a wise idea.

Re: Update manager crashes Windows about 30 seconds after admin us

Hi,

Thanks a lot for taking an interest in this.

No, I have not updated the driver yet. While I think I'm reasonably
competent on general XP management, updating drivers is kind of new to me.

The reason I posted the list of suggested drivers is that the more recent
ones seem to also support newer hardware (my MoBo is quite old, about 2
years+) so I was mainly wondering what driver would be most appropriate to
use. When I asked Silicon Images, they referred to me Gigabyte. Gigabyte in
turn supplied an update which can only be installed from a diskette and I
have no diskette station on my machine :-/..

Is there a way to find out what version of the 3112 driver Windows Update
would have provided, had I been able to update via it? Or a good suggestion
which of the drivers listed I should try?

Thanks! Håkan

RE: Update manager crashes Windows about 30 seconds after admin user l

OK,

So I'll close this one myself.

Turned out that the solution to the crash provided by MS was absolutely
correct (though it still seems wierd :-) and updating the RAID driver was
what was needed. Eventually I found out that the instructions provided to me
by Gigabyte for upgrading the driver were overly complex for me and I could
simply upgrade the driver via the hw explorer. As this was the first time I
had to do it, I'll just plead ignorance on not recognizing there was a
simpler way.

In the end, the outcome was that WIndows update now is back on line.

Thanks to all who chipped in to help, Håkan
