Thank you for your reply but I'm not sure if the error I'm getting is the
same as the one in the link.

Curious, was this machine every cloned? If so, it could be the cause of the
problem. I've seen it once before.
Is the server an SQL server?
Firewall on it?
Antivirus on it?
Did you try to restart the service?

I can't really find anything on EventID 9397, Source=VSS, especially with
the error given. It seems like a pretty new error, but for what it's worth,
the following are the steps to fix the Windows 2003 VSS Subscriber that was
caused by using NewSID. This was from a Microsoft engineer from another
post. I did not save his name, unfortunately.

________________
Fix the VSS subscriber:

The exact cause and nature of this corruption is not always known as some
cases have been caused by running the 32-bit NewSID tool (from Sysinternal)
on an x64 version of Windows Server 2003.

The COM+ subscription information for VSS writers, stored in the registry
under the following key is corrupted.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscriptions

The exact cause and nature of this corruption is not always known as some
cases have been caused by running the 32-bit NewSID tool (from Sysinternal)
on an x64 version of Windows Server 2003.

Steps to fix it!

1. Export the contents of the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem key to a
..registry file (as a backup).

2. Delete the following key (Just delete the Subscriptions subkey; leave the
EventClasses key.)
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscriptions
>

3. Restart the server.

4. Run the "VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS" command. This causes the VSS to
initialize and rebuild the writers in the following key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscriptions

No it wasn't.

Yes Windows Firewall is enabled.

MS FCS Installed but its service is disabled.

Do you mean VSS? Yes, also restarted the server a few times.

Were you able to follow those steps I provided to reset the VSS?

The instructions are for Windows 2003 Server but this is a 64bit Windows 2008
Server.

Are they the same for both versions of Windows?

Thanks...

As far as I know, VSS is VSS, and works and runs the same no matter if 32 or
64 bit.

RE: VSS Error on the Windows 2008 Server running Terminal Services

I'm getting the exact same error on a Server 08 x64 machine. The only thing
that I can tie with it is that the errors occur only during a backup via
windows server backup. I wish I knew how to solve it!

Ace,

Thanks for checking in on me and I apologize for not mentioning that I did
try what you suggested. When I removed the one key that you suggested and
attempted to re-boot the machine wouldn't shut down. I had to physically
turn it off and then back on. When the machine re-booted I ran the command
as recommended and all passed with "No Errors". I attempted a Backup (which
by the way has always been successful) and received the same error. Upon
checking the registry the subscriptions key no longer exists. I deleted it,
and it never re-created it.

Thanks again for your help. Any more suggestions would be greatly
appreciated!

I assume this machine was not cloned without being sysprepped.

Any services disabled?
Antimail : Don't disable system services! (unless you REALLY know ...):
http://blogs.msdn.com/adioltean/archive/2004/12/26/332540.aspx

What EventIDs are being generated?
It could also be simply a driver issue. Was anything updated recently?

Is the volume you are trying to backup an OEM created volume? Not sure if it
will apply, but take a look at the following link:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com.../thread/f5e53544-3a00-4863-a5bf-594b3310c4f2/

I know it doesn't apply to your case, but there's a hotfix for Windows 2003
VSS. There may be one not publicly released for 2008.

Sorry I can't think of anything else. Possibly get Microsoft PSS involved.
If you do, I would be curious of the cause and resolution they provide.

Ace,

This machine was never cloned. Not because of this issue, but because we
are going to replace the motherboard in the machine and switch to a different
RAID setup I will be reinstalling the OS. So I'll let you know if I get the
same problem on the new OS. Thanks for the help.

Re: VSS Error on the Windows 2008 Server running Terminal Services

machine was throwing this error when installing Northon Ghost 14.0. This did

Thanks!
