Backing Up - does anyone use 2 identical servers.

1 is the production and the 2nd. identical one is continually 'imaging' the
1st.
I would think it would be at the hadware level. Maybe a card in each server
connected via a cable.

Production box goes down, the lan cable, any printers etc would be unplugged
from it and plugged into the second and off we go.

Or something like it.

Hello ThomasAJ,

What you are trying to achive is called clustering, two servers connected
with a heartbeat NIC and automatically takeover when the other machine goes
down. Needs at least server 2003 Enterprise edition.

Nah.... Ain't gonna work... There's a reason why products like
LifeKeeper and DoubleTake get big bucks for setting up clusters like this.

Re: Backing Up - does anyone use 2 identical servers.

I was speaking to a hardware supplier and he thought that Hyper-V can run
accross 2 servers so that when one went down the other takes over.

He wasn't 100% sure. Any thoughts.

Hello ThomasAJ,

Maybe you describe what you are trying to achive. Hyper-V is the new virtualization
server from MS. With questions about this better post to microsoft.public.virtualpc
or microsoft.public.virtualserver

Re: Backing Up - does anyone use 2 identical servers.

If you do it properly you do not have to change over anything. As Meinolf
pointed out it is called failover clustering. You need to have some sort of
shared storage.

It is possible to have failover clustering with Hyper-V in Server 2008.
For testing you can use a network share as the shared storage. See this
description.
