Windows Vista Recovering after unknown error - trying to at least find my files

I own an ASUS F3Ka Laptop, with Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Whilst doing my usual internet browsing, I notice that my download (a
game patch) stopped. I checked it, and restarted it, noting that the
error was a "cyclic redundancy check".

Then the computer starts freezing intermittently - about 15-20 seconds,
then it would freeze for 2 or 3 seconds, so on and so forth.

Before I could figure out the problem, the computer turns off.
Completely on it's own.

The first thing I thought was perhaps the hard drive failed, despite
the computer only being around 4-5 months old, but there were none of
the telltale signs (loud clicking, missing files, etc.).

I tried booting to Ubuntu from a CD, and apparently the HDD is fine -
it was detected, and I was prompted to install a partition onto it,
during which procedure it detected the two partitions already there. I
didn't install Ubuntu - I just wanted to see if the HDD was ok.

So I search for my backup disc, and I can't find it. I google "Vista
Recovery Disc" and end up with two options:

1. A program called Vista PE that allows for the creation of basic
multi-boot discs or some such.

2. a Vista x86 recovery disk .iso (completely legal) - 'Windows Vista
Recovery Disc Download — The NeoSmart Files'

I tried the .iso, and while I can still access my BIOS and make the
laptop boot from the CD, after about 5 minutes, it shows the Microsoft
loading bar, then a mouse cursor, and it just stays there. I can move
the mouse, but there's nothing there, unless perhaps I'm just being
impatient.

Anyone able to help me out? I'd really like to be able to get my files
back before I re-format!

Pick your OS version download link at above link, download it to make a
bootable disk from your ISO file. Once done reboot with the Vista disk.
Do a startup repair, System restore, etc with it.

If all fails, use above Live CD link(another ISO file) to download and make
a Bootable disk.
Also read FAQs there.
Boot your computer with it. It does NOT install, only uses your RAM and
Graphics, etc; it runs from disk.
Use it to locate your Data, and copy it to a Flash Drive.
With flash drive permissions, untick "read only"
