Suddenly lost most of my drive letters - no SD!

I don't often use the media slots in my XP machine, so I don't know
when the problem occurred, but I've just tried to view some photos on
my SD (miniSD?) card and suddenly I can't see it (the card, I mean).
So I went to Explore My Computer and noticed that, whereas I used to
have drives D, E, F, G, H and I (or something) suddenly there are just
two (C: and D: - the CD) If I put a pen drive into the USB port I get
an E:. But putting a card into the SD port and nothing. nada.

Anyone any ideas?

Do you already have SP3 installed? If not, try obtaining the hotfix
from the KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946629

At the top of the page, click "View and request hotfix downloads",
agree to the terms, and fill in the form.

Check in Device Manager and see if your SD card reader is listed.

If not, then save the following as a 'Batch file" (ie: cleandm.bat)

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd %SystemRoot%\System32
start devmgmt.msc


Then,

1) Run this batch file
2) In Device Manager, Select "Show hidden devices...."
3) Uninstall the "Unknown" devices and any "ghost" card readers.
4) Unplug your card reader and reconnect it (if external device or
reboot if internal device.) This should tell Windows to redetect this
reader and reinstall it.

Before going crazy with drivers and software, open the computer up & make
sure the media cardreader is still properly connected.

I had a client with 30 Dell Precision Workstations which had a bad batch of
cardreaders and all had to be replaced. You might try calling your hardware
mfr. if you believe the device is properly connected & still doesn't work.
