Hello.

I've a Windows 2000 srv domain controller with active directory, I do
my backups with windows ntbackup on 10 DLTs 40 Gb.

I have just replaced all old 10 DLTs with other new 10 DLTs, and last
week I saw a difference of the DLTs showed by Removable Storage snap-
in and ntbackup: Removable Storage showed 20 DLTs and ntbackup 30 DLT
catalogs.

With no DLT cassette mounted in the DLT drive, I've removed
(eliminated) all the 30 DLT catalogs showed in ntbackups (right click,
eliminate) , and all the 20 DLT showed in Removable Storage were
eliminated too automatically.

After this, I've inserted the 10 DLTs (one after the other) and have
catalogued each cassette (I found the right catalog in every DLT, and
I've also 10 logs that tell me the last 10 backups was right).

My doubt:

removing (as written above) the DLTs from ntbackup and cataloging the
DLTs, is it possible that the data in my DLTs were damaged ?

Sorry for my very bad english...
Thanks to all for your help.
Bye, Rosgiof.

Uncataloging does not affect the data on the tapes. You simply
need to re-catalog them - but then you can (and should!) find
this out by yourself by running a quick test.

Hello Pegasus! Thank you very much for your answer.

As you suggest I'm testing the 10 DLTs: to do a quick test I'm
restoring some directories with about 40 - 50 Mb of files (the full
backup is about 30 Gb).
In your opinion if I find the correct catalog and I restore the
correct files making these small test restores (only 40-50 Mb) from
the DLTs, can I be sure that all the DLTs contain all the 30 Gb of
data correct ?

An other strange issue:

After using the 10 new DLTs, every backup I find a new catalog added
to the catalog list of ntbackup: ntbackup mantain the old catalog of
the DLT that is overwrited by the new backup and also show the new
catalog.
Before the change of the 10 DLTs the old catalog was correctly
overwrited by the new catalog and the catalogs showed were always only
the correct 10.
If I delete the old catalog, also the new catalog of the same DLT is
deleted and I have to re-catalog the DLT.

Could you help me about this problem ?

Thanks in advance for your patience.
Bye bye, Rosgiof.

Hello Pegasus and thanks again for your help.

Very funny your phrase about death and tax.... :-)

About the labels: I'm using the automatic labels that ntbackup write
when no label is defined ("day and hour" of the backup), I used the
same automatic labels also for the old DLT.

Do you think that is this the problem?

Again very very thanks for your help, you are very kind!
Bye, Rosgiof.

Hello Pegasus, waiting for your kind answer, I've another question
about the phrase
"provided that the tape and its file structure is intact" of your last
post.

How could I know that the tape and its file structure is intact?
Is it enough the 50 Mb restore? Or I have to do other tests?

Thanks againg for your help.
Bye bye, Rosgiof.

Hello Pegasus, waiting for your kind answer, I've another question

How could I know that the tape and its file structure is intact?
Is it enough the 50 Mb restore? Or I have to do other tests?

Thanks againg for your help.
Bye bye, Rosgiof.

=========================

I mentioned before that I am no expert at ntbackup catalogs.
Nothing much has changed since then.

If you want absolute certainty that the tape and its file structure
are intact then you have to retrieve all of your data. The less data
you restore, the greater the probability that there is a flaw
hiding somewhere. This, of course, is stating the obvious.

Hello Pegasus, thanks for your answer.

Ok, I understand that is better to do a full restore to check the DLT.

Thanks again for your help.
