SP3 Install Question?

I have attempted to install the 66.9MB SP3 both thru automatic updates and
Windows updates manually and both times whenever it gets to the installation
of "UPDATING REGISTRY KEYS" it immediately stops and the splash screen
stating "ACCESS IS DENIED" pops -up. I then have to resort to rolling back
all the attempted changes. I have even un-installed my AVG 8.0 virus program,
re-booted and this SP3 service pack still does the same thing at the same
point of the install process.

Before I attempted to install the SP3 service pack I ran CHKDSK, ran defrag
& disk clean-up, cleaned all temp folders, Ran my AVG virus app & Spyware
apps and found nothing and then disabled the programs & even un-installed the
virus app.

Can someone tell me why MS does NOT want the user to D\L the FULL SP3
service pack to install in a stand-alone computer ? Since my PC for some
unknown reason will not upgrade to SP3 with the suggested 66.9MB SP3 pack.

I am presently running XP2 with IE 6.0.

Regards & Thanks for any replys.

RE: SP3 Install Question?

First, make sure that your anti virus software isn't locking the registry and
preventing the installer from modifying the same.

Error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3: "Access is
denied" or “Service Pack installation did not complete”

MS strongly recommend you download from WU because at least then you know
your computer is ready for SP3. Also it's a smaller download.

Apart from that, there is nothing stopping you downloading the full file.

RE: SP3 Install Question?

I mentioned in my original post that I had even un-installed my anti-virus
app and the SP3 still failed to install.

I have d\l the Full 316MB SP3 to my desktop.

#1. If I disable my anti-virus app should I dis-connect from the internet
before attempting the Full SP3 install ?

#2. If the 66.9 MB SP3 pack wont install because of the registry
permissions then why would the Full 316.4 MB be able to be installed without
first re-setting the registry ?

# 3. Should I or can I use the below tool to reset my registry permissions
before attempting to install the Full SP3 pack ? Will this .exe tool reset
the registry without copying & pasting into notepad and running the script
from the cmd line. ? After using this tool to reset the registry should then
re-boot the pc before attempting to install the Full SP3 pack ?

Re: SP3 Install Question?

I guess my actual question is why try an attempt of installing the Full
316.4MB d\l in method 1 of the article fix if the 66.9MB would not install.
Why not run the registry reset tool .exe first, disable the anti-virus,
disconnect from the internet, and then attempt to install the Full 316MB ?

Thanks for for any replys & all the help thus far.

Re: SP3 Install Question?

Silverfox1, in addition, it appears you applied the SP3 blocker tool

Quote from you:
"I went ahead and installed the SP3 Blocker Tool and everything is
fine now and the annoying request went away. I guess for at least 12 months."

Unfortunately you forgot to mention your previous postings:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...015d&mid=8481e664-56a8-4d47-b6f7-79444af2015d

Why would you block SP3 and then less than 3 weeks later complain you can't
install it?

Re: SP3 Install Question?

Taurian, 3 weeks ago I decided against attempting to install SP3 and did as
you stated executed the SP3 blocking tool. Two days ago though I re-thought
my position and decided to install SP3 and I simply deleted the registry
command line that the SP3 blocking tool creates.

Thus like alot of folks I changed my mind.

So should I run the registry reset first or just attempt method #1 from the
MS article and attempt to install the Full 316.4 MB SP3 pack without doing
the registry reset?

Regards & Thanks for All your Help.
