Maxtor 1TB USB 2 Drive Only Seen As 43Gb?

Hi,

I've got a client who is running Windows 2003 Server SP2, they have
recently brought a 1TB Maxtor Basics External USB 2 drive that they
use for backups. If you plug the drive in, Windows sees the drive and
it seems to work fine. However, if you reboot the server, Windows will
only see the drive as 43gb, and keeps asking to format the drive. The
only way to get Windows to recognise the drive properly is to
disconnect the USB cable wait a few seconds, then plug it in again.
This is a bit of a pain, especially if you are trying to work
remotely. I've tried updating the drivers, but it seems to be using
the standard microsoft USB hard disk drivers, so doesn't actually have
any drivers to update.

Does anyone know why Windows isn't recognising the drive properly
after a reboot? Or know of a way to fix this problem? I can't find any
details on the seagate/maxtor support pages or knowledge base.

Many thanks

Ben

Hi Ben,
You may want to try this.
Get the system running so it sees the entire drive size
correctly,
then go into the Device Manager
and try right clicking the USB controllers
and click on Scan for hardware changes.
Maybe it needs a little push?
:)
See if it recognizes anything different.
