Outlook Express and sending mass emails

Good Day All

I need a hand if anyone can help me, we have a computer on our network
that we use to run batch files on pastel accounting software, when the
batch files run it sends emails out via the default smtp client (outlook
express) to clients, now the problem we have been experiencing recently
is that since an update of the system outlook express want to "to free
up disk space, outlook express can compact messages" every hundred
emails. now we usually leave this to run over a weekend or over night
because there are thousand of customers that we need to mail invoices
too. but every 100 this pops up and stalls the entire process.

What i ask is

Is there away to disable this that anyone has come across, i have been
reading around and so far cannot find anything, if i can at least edit
the registry and move this up to every 10 000 times outlook opens i
don't mind.

or is there a alternative?

We run an exchange server which this computer smtp's to to send out the
mails. so all i really need is a program that can relay the mail message
to the exchange.

any and all information is greatly welcome.

Re: Outlook Express and sending mass emails

I think it does it every 100 times you start OE, not every 100 e-mails.
On the other hand if you are opening and closing it for every e-mail,
you may want to review your programming.

It is every 100 OE sessions, NOT emails that OE wants to compact. If OE
is opening/closing for every email, you need to revise your
methodology - that's silly. Perhaps sort them into distribution lists
instead of individual addresses, too.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3).

Re: Outlook Express and sending mass emails

That's a quirk/bug that started with XP SP3.

Is OE open when you run that batch file? If not, open it and leave it
minimized and see if it helps.

Re: Outlook Express and sending mass emails

I've done a little testing with this.

With XP SP3 if OE is Closed and you open an EML file in OE (e.g. double
click it or right click and open with OE) when you close the EML file,
the OE compact count is incremented. In SP2, that did not happen. So
something has changed in the OE logic.

Under SP3, If OE is open, you can then open and close EML files all you
want and the compact count is NOT incremented.

I suspect that if OE is open while doing the mass mailing, that should
prevent the compact count incrementing. Since OE is not my default
mailer, I'm not in a position to test that.

Nice find, Michael! Have you posted about this you-know-where yet?
