I just booted my computer and got a message that said "Your Operating
System has been Stolen".

Now what do I do? Should I call the police? How do I get it back?
I never had this happen before.

Run your antivirus/malware utility.

Re: Stolen Operating System

Sounds about right. I know about the Operating System Not Being Found but
Stolen certainly sounds malicious.

RE: Stolen Operating System

I can tell you that you definately have viruses and trojans. Visit majorgeeks
and go to the right side of the screen and look for a link called spyware
removal. Follow the directions for your operating system to the letter. You
probably won't have to post anything. Running the four programs they suggest
should do the trick. Worked for me when it happened to me some months ago.

And then (perhaps) use System Restore to roll back to a point just preceding
this, and then rerun the antivirus again.

I'm thinking that way all remnants of it might be removed (some that might
possibly have been missed, otherwise).

In Windows 98? You know something I don't?

Sorry, my bad (was thinking of XP). One can, however, use scanreg
/restore in DOS mode (rebooting to real DOS mode), to roll back to a
previous registry.

No need to.... the police should be there shortly, as soon as your system
automatically uploads your address to them. Be sure to change your underwear before
they get there.... you'll be down at the station house for quite a while. <eg>
