Hello IT,

I would add it to the domain as member server, promote it, make it DNS/GC,
move the FSMO roles.

Ok, which means i do NOT upgrade the 2003 DC.

Instead i get a new machine and install as 2008 DC and move 2003 dc roles to
it

Hello IT,

Yes, but that would be my way, ofcourse you can also do an inplace upgrade.
But then you must have installed at least SP1 for 2003.
