Never had this happen before

[jeffrey palmer]

I got game CD "X" in the cd drive; it's already installed and I'm sure I
disabled autoplay on the drive. But everytime I start the comp up the game
goes to the setup/install procedure..

How can I stop this?

Take the CD out of the drive or remove the CD Drive from your boot sequence
(removing the CD prior to booting is, obviously, the best solution).

But removing the CD from the boot sequence would make a computer crash
(reinstall) more difficult. It's just that I have the stupid game installed
already and it shouldn't go to the setup proc again. Could my registry be
jazzed up?

Not at all. Just re-order the boot sequence in the bios when you want to
boot from a CD.

Yeah, what Mike said. It is going to the setup procedure because you have
the disc in the machine during the boot sequence! Take the CD out of the
machine, boot and THEN put the disc in.....it should go to the game. There
is no real need to remove the CD drive from your boot sequence......just
don't have a disc in the drive during boot or it will attempt to do whatever
is on the disc.

So in other words there isn't a startup file that I need to alter to prevent
this..

I've had the comp for 5 years now and this crap just started to happen....

Just? as in VERY recently??

If - as you imply - a previous setting (in WinMe?) has gone awry, then you
*might* get away with a System Restore by rolling back to the last time/date
when the CD didn't autoplay.

Otherwise, I'm with HL & Mike. But not too sure whether the CD was starting
immediately (due to a BIOS setting) or later as WinMe was loading/loaded
(due to a WinMe setting). I don't quite follow the logic of your statement
:-

You might want to try the following.

Install TweakUI (see below), open the Paranoia tab and uncheck the entry
"Play data CDs automatically", Apply and then OK out.

Note that this has nothing to do with boot order or using a bootable CD to
boot the system.

The version of TweakUI for use with Win Me is v1.33 . Since Win Me is
long out of support by Microsoft it has been removed from their download
centre so you need to grab a copy from a third party site such as
http://www.pctools.com/guides/software/detail/22/. Do not try and use
either a version prior to v1.33 or later versions such as v2.0 and above
which are for use with XP.

Download to a folder with a short name (e.g. C:\Tweak), run to extract
components, right click on tweakui.inf and then install, close the help
window that comes up to allow install to finish. C:\Tweak can now be
deleted and TweakUI accessed via the Control Panel.

Start TweakUI and open the "My Computer" tab. At the bottom you will see
a section labelled Special Folders. Select "My Pictures" from the Folder
drop down list, click the button Change Location and change the target to
wherever you now want your My Pictures folder located. When done click
Apply.

Just a few words of caution if you are new to using TweakUI on Win Me.
a) Do not change the first icon (My Documents) on the Desktop tab.
Doing this causes a number of script errors in Special Folders when using
either WebView or Active desktop.
b) Do not uncheck "Search Results" on the Desktop tab.
Doing this disables the Search in Explorer.
c) Do not hide the TweakUI icon on the Control Panel tab.
d) Do not uncheck "Show Control Panel on Start Menu" on the IE tab.
Doing this will prevent you from accessing the Control Panel including
TweakUI.
e) Do not uncheck "Shell Enhancements" on the IE tab.
This causes quite a few unexpected "problems".

I did have to re-install WinME and that's when the problem/anoyance started
to happen

I tried to disable the auotplay function and that doesn't seem to work
either. Will try tweakUI
