Hi,

After having a power failure yesterday i went to start my computer
today, it came up with the Checking file system on C: screen and got
about halfway done than windows started, after trying to play a few
games i realized that i was missing some game files. I tried to restart
my computer but it is stuck on CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of
3)... at 41% . there is no activity on the hard drive light at all. Do
you guys have any suggestions???

Computer info...

Vista home premium 32bit

MSI K9N4 SLI motherboard

Geoforce 8800gt

2gb of DDR2 800

AMD 4600+ 2.6ghz

320gb HDD

Thanks for your help :)

Re: Checking File system on C:?? Freeze?

Hi, Matt.

Sometimes it takes CHKDSK a very long time to resolve whatever problem it
finds. How long did you wait? Five minutes? Five hours? Sometimes the
delay can be a half-hour or more. Do you see another little dot appear on
the screen every few minutes? If you restart, does CHKDSK start again at
the beginning, or does it quickly get to the 41% again?

The power failure just might have corrupted the HD fatally, but that doesn't
happen nearly as often these days as it did a couple of decades ago.
Today's HDs are much more resilient. But fatalities do still happen
sometimes.

You might need to run a diagnostic from the HD maker. Seagate makes
SeaTools and other manufacturers have their own tools. When we buy a HD, we
usually get those tools on a CD in the box; if the HD was in the PC
originally, that CD may be in all the packaging in the PC box. If you can't
find the CD, then you should be able to download the tools from the
HD-maker's website - if you have a working computer or a friend with one.

Oh, I just noticed that you are coming into this MS public newsgroup via the
vBulletin USENET gateway, and messages do not always get relayed back and
forth properly, so I'm probably not seeing the whole conversation. Please
check back and let us know how this turns out. To post directly to the MS

Re: Checking File system on C:?? Freeze?

after the restart chkdisk will quickly get to 41%. I have waited 30mins.
The hdd came with an acer computer that I replaced all the parts on. I
may go buy a new one.

Do you get your normal list of work options when you tap F8 right at power on?
And if you do, can you get into Safe Mode?
