I bet few people know that the original formula for Coca Cola invented
by Doctor John Pemberton, some pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia in
1886 contained extracts of Cocaine as well as the caffeine-rich kola
nut and wasn't originally sold as a soft drink, but only over the
counter in drug stores as a tonic. It wasn't widely bottled not
becoming available in super markets and other retailers until the late
1950's and was mainly available at drug store soda fountains.
The exact formula is a closely guarded secret known wholly only to a
handful of people, but around the early 1900's the small traces of the
narcotic Cocaine were removed from the formula.
Also, several of today's popular street drugs were once sold legally
at the corner drug store including Cocaine, Morphine and several
others. Times change. ;-)
As long as we're going down memory lane, when I was a 10 year old kid
in the mid 50's you could go to a S.S. Kresge dime store (the company
that evolved into KMart, sit down at their soda fountain and order a
triple cheese burger that had three thick slices of perfectly melted
cheese will all the trimming and about a half a pound of perfectly
prepared fries all for about $2.00. A large Coke was about .35 cents.
