Hi:
This is my first Terminal Server. I have it up and running and people
runnning the application properly. Now I want to have people printing.

They are coming through a VPN using RDP and I want to install the Print
Drivers on the TS. How do I do that???

1. Install as local?? or Networked form the menus under 'Add Printer'??

2. Picking a port?? Which port, LPT, USB, Create Port????

3. Then what??

or is there another totally different process??

This first one will be a printer install on a client's PC, but then I also
want to install a networked printer on the TS that is located on the Remote
Network. Help??

I have cruised the Internet, and there is lots of info about problems after
you have got the printer drivers insatlled on the TS, but I could find
nothing about install the drivers on TS and the decisions that are made
during that process.

Help!!!

Thanks big time,
fox7

Re: Installing print drivers on TS

If you are simply looking at the getting driver on teh system then install
it anyway you like then delete the printer you created. the driver will
stay installed.

Don't manually install your users' printer drivers on TS - it's a good way
to break it. Make sure the user is using the latest RD client, the client is
set to redirect printers, & make sure you haven't disabled printer
redirection in the server . If their printer is not automatically redirected
ir's probably a multifunction or other consumer-grade printer and installing
the driver on the TS box is a really bad idea. I usually tell users that
such printers just won't work.

That said, if your budget permits you could check out a universal driver
solution. Myu preference is for ScrewDrivers from www.tricerat.com - it
works very well to redirect pretty much any printer.

Re: Installing print drivers on TS

I have to disagree with you Lanwench.

You definitely want to preinstall TESTED drivers and not rely on the windows
mechanism. In fact, I would disable that autoinstall mechanism. That way
you don't have to worry about untested, unverified, unstable drivers being
installed on the servers. only admins should ever install drivers on a
terminal server.

Well, I am admittedly not a TS guru, but I have always heard my TS guru
friends & colleagues state that manually installing drivers was a recipe for
disaster. Is this stale information? Urban myth?

Hello.

My two cents.

I had "lots" of trouble with allowing "smart users" automatically
redirect their own printers... Till we bought Screwdrivers. I have
some problems yet with speed of Ricoh Laser printers (from 25ppm to 3
or 4ppm) and Sharp printers with wrong layout, but the other server
reset and hang problems, never more...

Best Regards,

Germano.

Re: Installing print drivers on TS

I'm sorry to say but I would consider anyone that said that not to be a guru
but someone very inexperienced with terminal services. Allowing end users
the ability to install drivers intentionally or unintentionally is a huge
recipe for disaster. Only fully tested print drivers should be installed
and that means manually installing them by the administrator.

The #1 problem causing agent is print drivers in a TS environment. The best
solution is a UPD from Tricerat, ThinPrint, or Provision Networks.

That was mean of me to say and i apologize but what your friends say is very
frustrating especially when you've had to clean out print drivers for
clients before. sometimes hundreds of them...... :(

Don't worry about it - I didn't take offense. But that was nice of you to
think of, thanks.

I'm curious, tho - when a *limited user* logs in to TS and their printer is
redirected (using the native stuff), are they actually *installing*
something foreign, and if so, how come they have the privileges to do it? I
thought Windows used its closest match as found on the server....and that's
why a lot of printers just wouldn't show up redirected & throw an error in
the event logs, because Windows couldn't find an adequate driver. Discuss.
:)

Re: Installing print drivers on TS

It's how windows is setup. Users have the privilege to install print
drivers. it can be removed if needed but if you think of it from a
workstation perspective it makes sense. users have enoug privileges to go
out to a print server, double click a printer and the driver will
automatically install. You can make arguments for and against this
functionality. Personally on workstations it's fine, on TS it's bad. I
think MS should make it a default that this is disabled on servers or at
least TS.

Cool beans. Thanks for responding, Jeff. I guess I never thought they were
actually installing anything 'foreign' but that Windows was merely
*recognizing* printers from its native driver cache. You make a good point,
although even on workstations I've never had a problem with this setup. On
TS I generally use Tricerat Screwdrivers and have been really happy with it,
so this is somewhat moot, but I appreciate the info.

Re: Installing print drivers on TS

Hi Jeff,

The default is already as you say. On servers, normal users
don't have the ability to install print drivers. On workstations
it is the opposite.

Devices: Prevent users from installing printer drivers
