NTBackup / Tape Label problems

Greetings,

I am having problems running backups on an HP StorageWorks 1/8 Autoloader.
The backup fails when it tries to load the tape.

We are running Server 2003 sp1.

We have a copy of Backup Exec v8 that is installed. This version of
BackupExec does not support our Autoloader. I have tried to uninstall
BackupExec but it fails with a "uninst.iso is corrupted or not valid" error.

When I put a new tape into the Autoloader and try to run a test backup, it
recognizes that it is a new tape and tries to use it. After this part I
watched the tape drive load and unload the tape several times before ntbackup
started complaining about the wait time.

Eventually ntbackup said that it could not find tape 9 , but it found an
unrecognized media and asked if I wanted to use that. Rinse and repeat.

It looks like ntbackup is not able to label the tape correctly and keeps
giving the tape a new name. I read somewhere that BackupExec can cause
problems with ntbackup's labeling process.

Any help on this issue will be greatly appreciated. I apologize for the
convoluted question. I will try clarify any questions that people may have
about this issue.

Thanks,

Re: NTBackup / Tape Label problems

Although I don't have an autoloader. I also dumped BackupExec and went back
to the simpler and easier to manage NTBackup.

I suspect you may have to contact Symantec and see if they will help remove
the "crippled" BackupExec. Maybe they even have some kind of removal tool.

I dropped BackupExec because I thought it made things way to complicated too
deal with and the Agent was causing problems on one of my Domain
Controllers. Someone who loves the product may have stayed with it and
solved the issues,..but I guess I'm not one of those people.

The NTBackup, the way I have rigged it up, has worked almost flawlessly
since I went to using it.

Re: NTBackup / Tape Label problems

Backup Exec 8.0 is no longer supported, and Symantec will not help me
uninstall it. I have not been able to locate an uninstall utility.

Does anyone have any instructions on how to repair the built in Windows
ntbackup?

Thanks

How about reinstall it first? Maybe there is a "repair" option during the
reinstall. If that fixes the broken install then you can uninstall it
correctly.

Re: NTBackup / Tape Label problems

Well, I reinstalled Backup Exec over itself and was able to uninstall it. I
am still not able to succesfully back something up.

I get a lot of the following messages in the System log:

Re: NTBackup / Tape Label problems

The Tape Drive probably ran off of Drivers installed by Backup Exec.

You will need to install stand-alone Drivers for the hardware that is not
tied to Backup Exec.

Beyond that,...call the manufacture of the Backup Hardware. It is up to
them now at this point,..Backup Exec is gone.

Re: NTBackup / Tape Label problems

At this point it looks like a hardware issue. As I was rebooting this
morning I noticed that our SCSI HBA only listed the Tape Drive, not the
autoloader.

Whats curious to me is that Windows detects the Autoloader.

I disabled the Autoloader in device manager and I am able to back up
straight to the tape drive. This is not the best situation, but its a start
....

I can provide you with specific model information if you wish. If not, I
will move this over to the HP forums.

Thanks for your help!

Better ask in the HP Forums. I'm not going to be able to be much help at
this point.
Good luck with it.
