Hello everyone,

My problem is that my computer wont get to the desktop because it is so
rooted with viruses and what not (the windows loading screen finishes then i
get some message and a blank black screen), so i would like to clean install
windows xp but when i search for clean install/boot on google and microsoft
it says i must go to the start menu for the first step in the procedure. Is
there an option for me to clean install as i cannot get into windows?

also i have windows xp academic upgrade, and the full version on W98, would
this mean id have to install 98 and then XP ontop of it?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

Are you trying to install XP Pro x64? This group is specifically aimed at
64 bit Windows.
The usual way to do a clean install is to boot from the Windows CD/DVD,
but all the data on your OS drive (usually 'C') will be totally,
irretrievably lost in the process.

No, the new OS will ask you to put the W98 CD in at an early stage of the
install so it can check it, you don't need to install it.

This is a 64bit newsgroup, and I suspect your question is about regular
32-bit Windows XP, but a quick answer to get you started - you need a
bootable CD of Windows XP. You boot from the CD, and run the installation
from there. In your case, where you know you're trying to repair a machine
that is seriously infected, I suggest you start by deleting your partitions
and recreating them, and then format your drives. A complete wipe of the
computer.

If your computer came with an OEM "Restore" disk, you can use that. In both
these cases, however, you're going to lose your existing files.
