Hi all,

I've almost completed a clean re-installation of Vista and apart from
breaking the ZIP shell association, things 'seem' fine.

I've noticed a few odd behaviours that aren't life threatening but I can't
explain them.

(1) I'm unable to log onto the Discussions in Windows Vista General
Discussion
(http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/co...=microsoft.public.windows.vista.general&fltr=).
I click on 'Sign In' and initially I'm given an opportunity to enter my
Windows Live ID, and do so, I'm returned to the page without being signed in
.... and a subsequent attempt won't get past the page.

This behaviour occurs with both IE 7 and FF 3.01.

It's odd. I can log onto wherever I want too with my Live ID except the
newsgroups / forums. I have installed Silverlight 2.xx which I believe is a
beta release. Maybe this is not cooperating?

(2) I've installed the suit of Windows live modules including the messenger
.... really good work MS. Not certain if these are behind regular,
intermittent crashes for the browser (most of the time) and the shell
(explorer) on occasion. I have the Windows Live Toolbar in play ...

I'm also running Norton Internet Suite 2008 (NIS 2008 - 15.5.0,23) which
includes an antiphishing and security toolbar for IE 7 and FF 3.01.

Yes, NIS might be a culprit ... however, I've used it for ages and it's
behaved itself perfectly well on my system. I'm doing the clean
reinstallation only because my three windows operating systems (XP PRO /
Vista Ultimate and Server Enterprise 2003) have been going for a long time
and are slowly showing signs of age: instability and sluggish performance.

(3) Mentioned earlier ... if I pause the mouse over a ZIP file then explorer
will now crash most of the time. No reason ... no helpful info. Seems odd
and it's not something I've seen before the recent HUGE updates for Vista.

BTW - Vista Ultimate SP 1 (all updates and patches) / Office 2007 Pro (SP 1
and all patches / updates).

Cheers,

Mike

Above is the link to now use for all access to web interface newsgroups.
The other one that you were trying to access is "broke", as well as the rest
on that site.
MS knows about the problem, but are taking their own, sweet time to rebuild
the website!
