Volume icon on the taskbar

I am trying to enable the volume icon on the taskbar but whenever I go to the
'Sounds and Audio Devices properties' applet in CP and select the option I
receive an error saying the the Volume Control program is not installed and I
need to use the ADD/Remove programs in CP.

If you haven't figured out where this is going, there is no volume control
program to install and I haven't been able to find one.

Anybody has a clue where I might find it.

Thanks,

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

Hi,
are you sure about the hardware is installed correctly ?
sound enabled in bios, driver installed ?

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

Hi, jss27560.

What kind of sound device do you have? Please tell us the make and model of
your computer. Or, if you built it yourself, tell us at least the make and
model of motherboard and of the audio card. In Device Manager, what is
listed under Sound, video and game controllers? Oh, and probably most
important: are you using WinXP x64 or Vista x64? (If you're using WinXP
Pro or 32-bit Vista then you're in the wrong newsgroup. You might want to
try the Hardware Devices newsgroup for your operating system.)

It's easy enough to say that "it should be there". But it's not so easy to
guess why if it's NOT there. That's when we need additional information to
try to help you. Remember, we can't see your computer so you have to tell
us everything that we need to know.

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

I'm sorry for the confusion, I do not have a problem with the sound working,
I'm trying to get the volume icon to appear on the task bar by where the
clock is.

For what's worth, I'm running WinXP 64bit version with SP 2 (I never
understand why people seem to post in the wrong group) . It is a Gigabyte MB
with Realtek HD audio. Even when I bring up the Realtek app from the taskbar
it doesn't bring up the volume control.

What happend is when I go to the 'Sound and Audio devices properties'
settings there is an option to 'Place the volume icon on the taskbar' When I
check the box I get a popup saying that I need to install the Volume control
program from add/remove programs. I do not see one.

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

Hi, jss27560.

> For what's worth, I'm running WinXP 64bit version with SP 2

OK. I'd better back off and let someone else help. As it says in my Sig,
I'm running Vista and my Volume icon setting is quite different:
Right-click on Desktop | Personalize | Taskbar and Start Menu | Notification
Area...Whew! And then I can check Volume under Select which system icons to
always show. Vista doesn't even have Add/Remove Programs.

My EPoX MF570sli mobo also has Realtek HD audio, but Control Panel | Sound
never mentions a volume icon.

Since this is a "generic" WinXP question, rather than specifically 64-bit,
you might have a better chance in a discussion group like Windows XP
Hardware:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...osoft.public.windowsxp.hardware&lang=en&cr=US

Better yet, you might like the newsreader interface for reading these
messages, rather than the web-based Communities. The messages are the same;
only the appearance is different. To try it, just click here:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware

That one click will fire up your default newsreader (OE, unless you've
installed Windows Live Mail or a third-party app); create a News Account for
you on the Microsoft public news server, which is free and does not require
you to log in; connect you to the hardware NG; download the 300 newest
messages and show you the latest one. After a bit of familiarization, you
can post your question there. Then you can click Tools | Options and
customize OE/WLM/whatever to fit YOU. ;<)

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

Hi,
Volume control is in charge of sndvol.exe (or sndvol32.exe) located in
\windows\system32
Is it there?
It might have been deleted somehow.

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

Hi,
may be its the configuration of the "Info - Areal" in the "Task-Panel"
(sorry for my translations)

Try click right your task panel , properties
and look for "inactive symbols disabled / hidden"

if it is checked try unchecking or go "advanced" look for entry of "sound
manager" or the like
point on it (left mouse) and config it

jk

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

Go to the Control Panel and locate the Realtek Audio Manager. If your
installation is anything like mine, you will see a stylized "i" in the lower
right portion of the dialogue box. Click on that "i" and click on "Show
Icon."

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

Hi, Bogey Man.

Thanks for the tip, but there's no Realtek Audio Manager in MY Control
Panel. Just Sound, which gets me into some screens with no such "i".

I had to reinstall Vista last month and I haven't reinstalled drivers from
Realtek so I'm running just the generic drivers from Microsoft Update. I'm
not a gamer or audiophile, so the sound I'm getting is good enough for me,
but I might reinstall Realtek's stuff when I get time.

I DO have a Volume icon next to my clock; when I click it, there's a pop-up
that lets me choose Mixer, which then offers separate volume controls for
Speakers, Windows Sounds and Windows DreamScene. These don't always work
the way I expect and I've not studied them enough to figure them out.

I would be surprised if the Relate drivers didn't supply better control than
the built in drivers or the drivers from Microsoft. I would give them a try.

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

Hi, Ron.

Well, I tried to get the drivers from Realtek last night, but their website
(www.realtek.com) is inscrutable - to me, at least. So I Googled for them
and came up with several sites that offer the drivers, apparently for a fee!
I tried one, which was a friendly as could be until I asked for the
download, when it presented its EULA - and there was a paragraph there about
paying their invoice! :>( I aborted, then tried again and got the same
EULA. They hadn't asked for a credit card yet, so I continued and
downloaded their DriverDetective.exe, which ran until it got to the point of
downloading the drivers. Then it wanted $29.95! So I bailed out again. It
was my bedtime, so I never did get the drivers.

Then I went to Belarc, which I've often seen praised in newsgroups, and
downloaded their Advisor and ran it. It told me a lot about my computer,
but didn't offer drivers. Under Multimedia, it listed the same 3 devices as
Device Manager:

Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1600 NTSC/ATSC Combo
High Definition Audio Device
Pinnacle PCTV 800e

So I went back to the CD-ROM than came with my EPoX motherboard in December
2006 and found the Realtek drivers, including the one that I seem to need:
WDM_A392.exe, but that is dated 9/21/06, before Vista even went RTM. When I
tried to install that, it apparently hung my computer; I'm guessing it's for
WinXP - or maybe for 32-bit.

Anyhow, as I said, my computer has been working fine without those drivers
for nearly two years. The only thing I'm apparently missing is that little
icon that looks like a lobster with claws upraised but really is a Maestro
conducting an orchestra. I can live without that, so I'm done fiddling with
this - for now. I have seen that and the several Realtek utility screens,
but maybe it was when I was running WinXP.

Maybe I'll revisit the topic when I have more time. Thanks for your help.

R.C.,
Search for "carlos realtek" in this forum and you will find links for the
two possible realtek chipsets: AC97 and HD Audio.

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

I only spotted this thread now - to get back to the original post, isn't
that icon ticked off in the 'Mixer' (or, Volume Control) applet? I'm sure
that's where I set mine, even though it's been a while.

I just turned off that machine - here on the Win2K machine it's in the
'Sounds and Multimedia' applet. It is not generally available through the
drivers or managers, I don't think.

Re: Volume icon on the taskbar

Hi, Dominic - and Carlos.

Eureka! I have found it! But only after much frustration at the Realtek
site!

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Once I arrived at the pages that you guys gave me, I tried various searches
(alc8, alc885, WDM_392...), but they took me around in circles. Finally I
searched for "Vista" and got the page above. The top offering on that page
is "Vista Driver (32/64 bits) Driver only (ZIP file) R2.02 2008/8/18
23008k". Bingo! Their link from Taiwan must go by way of Beijing or
somewhere because it took about a half-hour on my cable broadband, but I
finally got the file, Vista_R202.zip. This evening I ran it and it seems to
be working.

Yes, I now have the Realtek HD Audio Manager in the Notification Area. When
I right-click it, I get several options including Sound Manager. Device
Manager now says "Realtek High Definition Audio", from Realtek, driver
version 6.0.1.5683, dated 8/12/2008. I've even got the "lobster" icon back!
;<}

I hope the op is still reading along and can get some benefit from all this.

Since I've already admitted that I'm not an audiophile, I'm not sure it was
worth all that trouble, but I'm glad to be up to date. Thanks, Guys!
