Yesterday Microsoft sent me Service Pack 3.

Since then, my main email account with Yahoo has received no emails. I
would normally have had about 15.

The error message says:-
The server responded with an error. Account: 'xxxxx@yahoo.co.uk', Server:
'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy
Server: Cannot connect to the mail server!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

I sent myself one using a spare account, with no problems.

Can you tell me how to fix this, or can I roll back to before SP3 was
introduced. I like to keep up to date but want to receive emails even more.

I use Windows XP, Outlook Express

[X-post to OE General]

Troubleshooting error messages that you receive when you are using OL and OE
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813514

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Re: SP3 has blocked incoming email

Thank you for your quick reply.

I disabled email scanning, as you suggested and now have a new error message
saying

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 's.peltz@yahoo.co.uk',
Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Any ideas?

Re: SP3 has blocked incoming email

Simply disabling email scanning usually isn't effective. You need to
uninstall the anti virus program and do a custom re install without the
email scanning module.

Re: SP3 has blocked incoming email

Please answer the following questions:

OE Tools | Identities | Manage identities: Is "Main Identity" the only
identity listed here?

Are you running AVG (Free?) v7.5 or v8.0? If the latter, did you upgrade
from v7.5?

What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) is installed? What
third-party firewall (if any)?

Were any of the above running in the background when you installed WinXP
SP3?

Re: SP3 has blocked incoming email

I have looked through the article on how to troubleshoot error messages. It
is very comprehensive but a bit complicated for me. If I could understand
it, I too might have MS MVP after my name.

I do not want to bother my ISP, partly because I am not confident of getting
a helpful response but mostly because I can pin point the start of the
problem to downloading Service Pack 3 yesterday.

To answer your questions:-

Only main identity listed
AVG 7.5
I use Spybot Search and destroy, (occasionally) and AdAware as well as AVG.

There was nothing in the task bar showing as running when I installed SP3.

I hope this helps.

You should have disabled AVG before you installed SP3. Sometimes having the
AV running causes many problems; sometimes it doesn't. In the case of a
large update such as SP3, it is prudent to turn off AV scanning.

Re: SP3 has blocked incoming email

You will want to print or copy/paste these instructions into Notepad for
offline reference.

1. Download the installer for AVG Free v8.0, saving it to your C: drive
(i.e, C:\avg_free_stf_en_8_138a1332.exe[) =>
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe or
http://www.grisoft.cz/filedir/inst/avg_free_stf_en_8_138a1332.exe

2. Uninstall AVG 7.5 via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've got AVG 8.0 installed,
properly configured, and updated!

3. Carefully follow these instructions to install AVG 8.0:
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1338

Tip: Opt to do a CUSTOM install and do NOT install the toolbar (if offered)
or either of the email scanners.

4. Configure AVG as you wish via User Interface | Tools | Advanced settings

5. Manually check for and install any available updates.

AVG Free Suport Forum
http://freeforum.avg.com/

6. If the behavior persists, your current Identity may be damaged,
especially if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your
accounts in a new Named Identity (File | Identities | Add new identity).
Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2)
import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete
the old one (File | Identities | Manage Identities).

7. If the behavior persists in the new identity, chances are that you have a
"horked" install of SP3.

To avoid such identity corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary...

I have Internet connectivity through "at&t Yahoo! HSI", and have no trouble
connecting to 'pop.att.yahoo.com' with MSOE 6 on Windows XP, SP3.

Of course, Yahoo! Mail has changed to requiring POP3 connection to port 995,
with SSL enabled, for accounts in the 'yahoo.com', 'yahoo.com.au', and
'yahoo.co.jp' domains, as well as the various AT&T legacy domains, such as
'pacbell.net', which comes with my ISP account. Perhaps BT Yahoo! has done
the same?

Re: SP3 has blocked incoming email

Thank you.

I copied your instructions and was all set to follow them when my problem
unexpectedly cured itself. I had been fiddling about a bit, but this was a
surprise and a pleasant one.

Now, I should still upgrade to AVG 8.0 as they are giving up on 7.5.

Does your advice to uninstall AVG 7.5 first still apply?

with thanks from

your grateful correspondent

Re: SP3 has blocked incoming email

As AVG v7.5 will not be supported after 31 Aug-08 (cf.
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=29379 &
http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?1,136697), I would strongly recommend that
you either follow the instructions in my last reply *or* uninstall AVG &
replace it with another AV app.
