I am doing a large file server upgrade. I will be migrating hundreds of
shares from a Windows 2000 server to a Windows 2003 server (SP2).

Is it possible to merge or import the Windows 2000 Lanmanager Shares
registry key in to the Windows 2003 registry? This is the registry location
for shares and their security.

If not, what is the best way to create or migrate shares w/ security intact.
I can migrate the data w/ NTFS permissions just fine. I would like to know
the most efficient and safest way to migrate or create new shares.

Thank you in advance

Hello JT,

Yes you can import them, the same registry path is used. If not sure you
can try one first and then the rest.

Re: Migrate shares from W2K to W2K3 server

For the last server migration we used a solution called secure copy Everything went smooth - all the data including secuity permissions, all shares and it's permissions were copied without any issues.

Great feature of this tool is that if something is locked, it gets rescheduled for more copying attempts only AFTER all the rest of data has been finished copying.
I was also surprised with the speed - the process went very fast because of multithreaded technology.

Secure Copy - ScriptLogic

If you don't want respondents to tag your post as spam then you should
mention that this is a commercial product sold by a network of resellers.
Since the page you quote does not state any prices, I guess that the product
is expensive.
