File sort reversed in common dialog

[Rich Pasco]

For several days now, the list of files and folders is reversed in any
application which uses a common dialog for File/Open and File/Save.
That is, the files and folders beginning with "Z" are at the top of
the list. I can correct it temporarily by right-clicking and choosing
"sort by name" but the next time I invoke File/Open or File/Save it is
backwards again. How can I fix it permanently?

close the dialog box by holding down CTRL and clicking "X" after you set
the file order.

Nice try, Bob, but that didn't fix it. It's reversed again the next
time I invoke File/Open. Thanks anyway.

Then something else is wrong. That's the method to save the preference.
Are you at SP2 or later? (increases the number of folders that settings
are retained for) Or you may increase it yourself.

I found one solution:

I opened Windows Explorer (on my "My Documents" folder). I clicked on
the column heading "Name" until the files were sorted by ascending
order. Then I went to Tools / Folder Options / View and clicked on
Apply to All Folders.
