Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me. I recently purchased a PC game off of Ebay
only to find out when I tried to run it I received a win.ini [INTL] error.
Now the program appears to install properly it is just when I try to run the
program that I get this error. I looked on the internet for help on this
error and all I have found is that it refers to an INTERNATIONAL error
associated with my win.ini file. I have even tried the Windows compatibility
wizard but that does not seem to help.

The game I am trying to run is an older Win 95/98 program so I believe it
has something to do with that but other than that I don't have a clue. It is
funny because the game and all refeence material is in english, although the
distributor is from Europe I believe.

I am really quite frustrated that I can't run this game and thought someone
on the discussion group could provide me with a solution to this problem.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Applications for Windows 95 and 98 were quite dependent on win.ini as
well as their own *.ini files to run. These changes were made at the
time of tbe program's installation. The win.ini error refers to an
operation that has been appended by the game into the win.ini file but
for which there is no corresponding system file or executable in XP.
This situation is not uncommon since applications written for Windows
9X might not be operationally compatible in Windows XP. Look for an
upgrade of the game or a patch for Windows XP.

Re: win.ini [INTL]

Thanks for the info. If there is no patches for the two games that came in
the pack, because they are so old is there any other way to get these
programs to work or am I out of luck?
Can I modify the win.ini files etc? How was the game CD's win.ini
previously modified by a previous owner?
Additionally I have an older machine that runs Win 98, will the problem
still occur if I try to run it on this machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to give up on these
games.

If the game was written for Windows 9X, then it would certainly run
in a Windows 9X machine. As mentioned by GRider, Windows 9X is not
the same as Windows NT/2000/XP; there are major differences.

However, Windows XP does have a win.ini file. It can be opened by a
text editor. Look for [INTL]. What is written in the line(s) that
follow it and before the next [XXXX...] entry? Or next to the equal
(=) sign? This should provide a clue as to what is missing and is
required by the game. However, there is no guarantee that the Windows
XP version of the required file will function with the Win9X game.

Of course, if one knows how to edit win.ini files, read the game's
FAQ and look for changes that might be needed.

Good luck. Computing is not so much fun today as they were when one
could demon tweak Windows 9X through its *.ini files.

You might try one of the microsoft.public.games groups.

You might also get more help if you identify what game you are talking
about. Or ask the Ebay seller.

That's exactly why it was sold on Ebay. Best bet when getting any used
PC is to wipe the drive with zeros, then install the OS you want to use.

The OP said he bought a game not a PC.

Re: win.ini [INTL]

Thanks for the info Bill.
For your information the two games are Air Warrior III and Carrier Strike
Fighter.
I have found some patches online for these games and will try to see if they
may fix the problem.

Re: win.ini [INTL]

Hi!

(better late than never to reply, I guess)

All I could guess is that perhaps you are supposed to specify a code page,
but I don't remember ever seeing anything like that in WIN.INI. Hmmm...did
old versions of Windows store information from the regional control panel in
WIN.INI? That information might not be present on a Win9x system.

I couldn't even really tell you where to start, other than the code pages
you probably want to use are 437 or 850. Windows-1252 probably also warrants
investigation.

But I'm just grasping with concepts that I haven't touched in a long time.

If that's really true, it should not be tinkering with WIN.INI. (Yes, that's
an ideal theory, and it may not match the reality of things.)
