I have just taken over support of an old W2000 (with SP4) server acting as a
terminal server and a license server.

Everything has been fine for about 4 or 5 years relating to external clients
connecting via terminal services.

Recently 1 client got the message "Terminal services temporary license
expires in X days". When the X reached to 0 the user stopped being able to
connect. If i try and connect i get the error "The remote computer
disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol.
Please try connecing to the remote computer again or contact your server
administrtor." Event ID 1004 "The terminal server cannot issue a client
license" is logged in the System event log on the server. Until recently i
was able to connect via TS successfully.

On the server in Terminal Services Licensing i get 2 items:
1. "Existing Windows 2000 License" Type=Built-in, Total=Unlimited,
Available-Unlimited, Issued=14
2. "Temporary Licenses for Windows 2000 Terminal Services Client Access
License" Type=Temporary, Issued=14

When 2 is selected 10 issued licenses are shown (including my PC name) but
all with "Expires On" dates that have already expired

I have tried reactivating the license server but it did not seem to make any
difference.

To clarify between 5 and 10 remote users have been connecting via TS for 4
or 5 years but suddenly some are no longer able to connect but others are
still able to.

Is my problem that the 10 cals originally purchased have disappeared and
need reinstalling or is something else going on.

Many thanks for your help

Re: Temporary Licenses for Windows 2000 Terminal Services CALS

Yes, that seems to be the problem. If your LS only lists the built-
in and temporary licenses, then there are no purchased licenses
installed on the LS and clients who do not run W2K Pro or XP Pro
(and thus need a purchased TS CAL) cannot connect when their
temporary license expires.
How these purchased licenses have disappeared is difficult to say.
You can get an indication about *when* it happended by looking at
the "Issued" dates for the temporary licenses. It must have
happended at least 3 months ago. Maybe the server or the LS
component was uninstalled and reinstalled?

Anyway, the solution is to dig out your original paperwork that
came with the purchased licenses and install them again on the LS.

Re: Temporary Licenses for Windows 2000 Terminal Services CALS

Thank you for your post.

There is a problem getting the paperwork for the purchased CALS. The
customer cannot seem to find them and the IT guy they purchased them from is
on holiday and non-contactable (dont ask!!!).

The only paperwork they can find relating to TS licensing is the automated
email re Terminal Services License Server Activation which contains a PIN
number. Before this was found i contacted Microsoft's licensing side on the
phone hoping that they would be able to lookup the previously purchased CAL's
via the customers name and address. I was told that they cannot do that and
that i need to find the licenses or go back to the supplier - but we dont
know which supplier the licenses were purchased from. Do you know a
department at MS that may be able to provide the missing license info and
will the fact that i have the email containing a pin number help?

Many thanks,

Re: Temporary Licenses for Windows 2000 Terminal Services CALS

I'm afraid that you're out of luck :-(
Microsoft doesn't store information about your licenses, so they
will not be able to help you.
The PIN is only used to activate the LS, you need the License Pack
number to reinstall them.
