not sure where to post this.
I have a 2003 server that hosts exchange 2003 and the server is not listing
in either net view or my network places both of which I believe use netbios.
The server is listing in AD, thru DNS of course. I have tried using the
lmhosts file but that was unsuccessful. This has become a critical issue
since our BackupExec application uses netbios for it's restore process. The
nic WINS settings on the server has two servers listed, netbios is enabled ,
and all related services are running. Also, search>computers on network from
a client machine resolves the name of the server.

any help with this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Do the WINS Server being pointed to actually exist and are actually
functioning correctly?

Do the WINS Servers actually list all the correct machines in the database?

Do the contents of both WINS Servers agree with each other?

Do all relevant machines (mail server and all the clients) actually use the
correct WINS Servers in their TCP/IP Specs?

Re: WINS

excellent questions Phillip.

1. I did discover that one of the wins servers was down. I activated it and
it is responding. the server has a red and white icon but the server has a
green up arrow?? But, the secondary that the [exchange]server is pointed to
is and was up and running.

2. the server that is running does list all of the correct machines

3. Can't tell yet if both servers agree since I just restarted the wins
server that was down.

4. Yes, all machines have correct wins in their specs and both wins servers
are pointed to themselves.

FYI-
nbtstat -A [ip address] & nbtstat -n are both returning ADMINISTRATOR <03>
UNIQUE CONFLICT for the [exchange] server
