Time Zone keeps changing...?

Howdy,

I run XP SP3...

Perhaps two years ago, the system started changing its time
zone setting quite frequently (and apparently randomly.)

If I recall correctly, there was a download from MS that
corrected the problem. I ran it, and all has been well
since.

Until about a week ago...

Now, I have the problem again: I am East Coast US, but at
least every day, my system sets itself to Brasilia.

I checked the MS site, and attempted to run the DL that I
believe corrected the problem in the past, but I got an
error telling me that I had a newer version of XP, and did
not need the update.

What can I do to correct this difficulty?

Many thanks,

Have you tried getting the fix from this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951072

Re: Time Zone keeps changing...?

Is the machine currently fully patched at Windows Update? Go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and be sure.

DST Support Center
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cp_dst

Otherwise, your CMOS battery might need to be replaced.

Hello again,

I just gave it a try, but received an error telling me that
I already had it installed.

I un-installed, then re-installed...

Of course, it will take a few days before I will know if
this might have helped.

Many thanks for the suggestion,

Hello again,

The battery idea is interesting, and I went wild and
invested the $2.95 to replace it.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Howdy,

I read the description with care, but it does not seem to
describe the problem I am having.

I will look into it further if the problem returns.

Thanks again,

YW. Check in at Windows Update anyway.

I have updates set to "Auto" but tried anyway. Nothing shows
us that might be relevant.

All the best,

Re: Time Zone keeps changing...?

Hello again,

I have replaced the BIOS battery, have all appropriate
updates, but still my system (which should be Eastern Time
U.S.) resets itself to the Brasilia Time Zone.

I should add that I launched the Time Zone Editor hoping to
delete the Brasilia Time Zone as an experiment, but I get an
error telling me that "You are not logged onto the Windows
NT workstation as a member of the user group that has the
right to delete any of the workstation's time zones."

But, I am logged on to an Administrator account.

Might you have further thoughts on this hassle?

Many thanks,

Just for the heck of it, boot into Safe Mode and try setting the time
zone and see if it sticks.

Howdy,

Well, it worked perfectly... for now <g>...

It will take a week or so to know if it sticks.

Hi again,

I believe I have it resolved...

Over the last many weeks I had researched this problem using
any description I could come up with.

Then, minutes ago, I tried yet again, but used a different
set of phrases in my search.

I came up with a hit that seems to have solved it:

I frequently move my laptop between networks and use a piece
of software called NetSwitcher to automate the process of
managing all the relevant network settings.

(Hey, can you see where this is going...?)

Well, NetSwitcher has a setting for Time Zone that I had
never noticed, and one of 'em was, indeed, set to Brasilia!

Thanks for all your help on this,

I don't know why but I think the appropriate response to this is "What
a world. What a world." Glad you nailed it down.
