I am running a home computer with windows 2000 sp4. The problem i am having
is when i shutdown for the evening it takes several times of clicking
shutdown for the system to power off. There are no error messages nor any
other applications that need time to close. I tried waiting 20 minutes before
i click shutdown for the second time. It will only shutdown on the first
attempt if i turn on my system for a short period of time (5-10 minutes) and
then shutdown. Any ideas?

Re: shutting down

Taipan,

What applications are running in the system tray (next to the clock) when you
shutdown?

It sounds like one of them isn't listening for the QUERYENDSESSION Windows
Message stopping the shutdown

If you can END TASK those applications in the system tray one at a time to see
which is the application stopping it

Please post back,

Sometimes, I've found using CTL-ALT-DEL, then doing a shutdown from
there can be more 'forceful' than from the Start menu.

Re: shutting down

Andrew,

Whichever method you use it still calls the same piece of code with is to check
token privileges for the user & see if they are allowed to shutdown the machine
then calling ExitWindowsEx API forcing it usually. So, pressing the SAS won't
make the slightest bit of difference

Especially, if you press shift and shutdown or ctrl and shutdown to restart
or ctrl and logoff to force a logoff
