Hi
We have a W2K8 configured as terminal server with a TS Gateway and TS
Licensing server inn an SBS 2003 R2 domain. We can connect thru Remote Web
Workplace (RWW) to the W2K8 TS. The connection works fine, and we are not
experiencing any connections problems what so ever.

We can also connect thru TS Gateway on the TS server, allowing us connection
on port 443. When we connect thru the terminal server gateway, we can log on
to the W2K8 TS. At random and persistently the RDP client will lose
connection to the TS. The RDP client will reconnect time after time and so
often that it is impossible to work. At times it will continuously connect,
lose connection and reconnect.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what may be the source of this problem?

To anyone that is struggling with a similar problem. According to PSS this is
a bug. It is affecting Per User CALs. There is still not a patch available.

Re: TS Gateway - RDP keeps losing connection and reconnects

So this is an issue if you are using Per User CAL's but not per device?
What exactly is the bug? Is it a certain configuration?

Re: TS Gateway - RDP keeps losing connection and reconnects

I can’t explain the bug, just its behavior as previously described. In the
system log, there was an event 1004 – “The terminal server cannot issue a
client license. It was unable to issue the license due to a changed
(mismatched) client license, insufficient memory, or an internal error.
Further details for this problem may have been reported at the client's
computer.” The event après when logging on to the TS via TS Gateway. There
are no other sign of errors in event log or extended W2K8 logging. There are
no errors in TS Licensing or TS Gateway logging. In fact another event is
confirming correct licensing and accepting logon via TS gateway.

After logon users are disconnected and the connect / reconnect starts. This
will not happened when logging on to the TS internally or via RWW (ts proxy)
on the SBS 2003 R2 server. There are no problem contacting the server via
port 3389 from internet (The SBS 2003 R2 and the W2K8 server have different
public ip’s). In my case the problem is isolated to the TS Gateway.

I was told by PSS that it was related to Per User CALs and that it was
registered as a mayor bug at Microsoft the 20.08.2008. Due to the severity of
the bug, I was told that one could expect a quick fix. No time frame.

Please note that the server in question was not investigated by PSS other
than by questions. Diagnosis was made by PSS after contacting MS USA, that
was familiar with the problem.

Re: TS Gateway - RDP keeps losing connection and reconnects

From my PSS contact, bug id(?):957068 and the hot fix should have the same
number when appearing.

Re: TS Gateway - RDP keeps losing connection and reconnects

Is there any way to "reset" this?

I have a single W2K8 Standard system (no other servers) that seems to be
doing something similar. Remote users can connect via RDP but can no longer
log on. They get an invalid user - password response. The event viewer shows
a 1004 event for each try.

Right now the remote users are totally locked out. I've even tried rebooting
the server and the remote users still can not logon.

Also, is there any way to be notified when the hotfix is available or do I
have to keep doing a search for it?

Re: TS Gateway - RDP keeps losing connection and reconnects

Here's the article:

957068 - Event 1004 is logged even though a user successfully logs
on to a Windows Server 2008-based terminal licensing server that
has "Per User" terminal licenses installed: "The terminal server
cannot issue a client license"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=957068

You'll have to call MS Support to get it. If you don't ask any
other questions, you'll get the hotfix without costs.
