I've got a Domain Controller that is low on space. The thing is, I just freed
up 25 GB on hard drive space on it a couple of weeks ago (relocated the
software storage folder). I did this because it was low on space and running
poorly because of it. And now this server is running so slow that I have to
reboot it several time a day and it only has 3.38 GB's of free space.

How do I figure out what is filling up the hard drive? We use DFS
replication. This DC holds the Schema Master Role. I'm sure you will need
more info in order to be of help; I just don't know what to posted. Just ask.

Thanks,
DJ

Have a look at the item "C Drive filling up fast", posted here only a few
hours ago . . .

RE: Disappearing hard drive space on 2k3 DC

I had the same issue yesterday and found that it was my virus def's. I used a
program called "foldersizes" to find my larg files. You can download a trial
copy at www.foldersizes.com

Re: Disappearing hard drive space on 2k3 DC

Please help.
I'm not getting any answers just more questions. I've been reading and
trying stuff for over a week now.

Something I noticed is I have System error 333 showing up over and over.
The free space changes in minutes, like it when in to see how much I had
left, it was 4.19 GB which was great seeing how it was just over a GB this
morning and while I was writing it down, it changed to 3.02....
The paging file is set for a max size of 4092 MB. The event logs are set and
overwrite.

Off topic: Why do the size and size on file differ so much on some files?
Should the share folders vary so much from from one DC to the next, after
replication (20GB+)? I'm new to active directory, I've used some of it like
GP but nothing like this... file sharing with roaming profile, used by multi
users. I'm in a bit over my head.

Ok, I have scanned for everything I can think of, viruses, malware, and I'm
trying to see what has been modified today. I get so many results when I scan
for modified..... and it that's for ever. I have saved copies of the log
files if you'd like to see them.

I know I'm all over the place with this post but I've been working on this
all week and really haven't got anywhere. It's making me crazy.

Thanks,
DJ

Have a look here:

Look for the phrases "This often happens" and "Thank you".

Re: Disappearing hard drive space on 2k3 DC

I've ran chkdsk, checked modified files with foldersize - a lot of small
stuff, but nothing that really stands out. We have file shares that use file
replication in AC the users profiles are on there so lots of changes are made
daily....

Try this:
1. Download this file:
http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/1875721_ygy1v/rdir.vbs]rdir.vbs[/url
It will be there for 24 hours. Put it into c:\Windows.
2. Start a Command Prompt.
3. Type these commands:
cscript //nologo rdir.vbs "d:\"{Enter}
(Replace d:\ with the drive letter you're having problems with)
notepad c:\rdir.txt{Enter}
4. Post the contents of the notepad screen.

Re: Disappearing hard drive space on 2k3 DC

Thanks. I've done it and I'm waiting. The DFSshares folder is around 125 GB.
That's what it's scanning/collecting now. I'll post it when it's done. Thanks
again.

The numbers up to and including "System Volume Information" are entirely
reasonable. You now need to do your own homework. Here are the things an
administrator would look at:
- Does the total figure of 140 GBytes, plus free space, add up to your disk
capacity?
- Is the figure of 120 GBytes for your DFSShares reasonable?
- Does it remain constant?
- If it keeps going up, which of its subfolders is growing? (Use rdir.vbs to
find out!)

Re: Disappearing hard drive space on 2k3 DC

Update: As of last Thursday this server reboots about ever 5 minutes..

Something was up with the shares. Conflict and deleted folder is the one
growing. I kept getting Event ID 13568 (sysvol share is in JRNL_WRAP_ERROR)
I enabled journal wrap automatic restore.
This had seemed to fix every thing, but a System Error 102 (The one that has
it crashing and DFSR error 6002 (invalid msDFSR-Member object data??).

I also noticed that a server that crashed about a month ago was still
listed in Distributed File System tree. I removed it. After a lot of reading,
I install ADSIedit and to take a look.

Here's the error:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DFSR
Event Category: None
Event ID: 6002
Date: 9/29/2008
Time: 4:45:01 PM
User: N/A
Computer: 50-SERVER-2
Description:
The DFS Replication service detected invalid msDFSR-Member object data while
polling for configuration information.

Additional Information:
Object DN:
CN=936583f5-6d1e-4244-b67b-c8fe3bea37fa,CN=Topology,CN=it.abbe-lib.org\\domainshares$\\publicfiles$,CN=DFSR-GlobalSettings,CN=System,DC=it,DC=abbe-lib,DC=org
Attribute Name: msDFSR-ComputerReference
Domain Controller: 50-server-2.it.abbe-lib.org
Polling Cycle: 60 minutes

ADSIEdit.. in the folder object (936583f5-6d1e-4244-b67b-c8fe3bea37fa),
there are two entries. However, I have know idea what they are or what I can
do to fix this. This error shows everytime the server crashes. I can't seem
to find any info or answers about this. Can you tell me, what will happen if
I delete them or how I find out which server they are???

Regards,
DJ
