I would like to test windows 2008 in it's terminal services role. In
particular I would like to see how it does with sound playback and
recording from remote workstations. I've installed it on an older pc and
the built in audio chip is not recognized (asus K8N motherboard). If I
buy a windows 2008 compatible soundcard, will I be able to proceed with
my testing? Can anyone recommend a card?

Seems like an obvoius question but I wanted to confirm.

Sounds is generated by a virtual driver, not the actual sound card. You do
not need a sound card.

Now saying that, you will probably have bad performance. i would recommend
a solution like Provision Networks who have specialized in extending RDP and
have exactly thi stype of capability in their latest product.

I've written to provision about features and pricing but have not heard
from them, and it's been a while. Are they doing well as a company?
Their product lineup is nice but there are no prices listed and I'm
concerned about support and long term viability.

Does the 2x app server help with sound?

Thanks for sparing me the sound card purchase!

I don't know about the 2x product but the Provision licensing is $50 per
concurrent user for their "standard" product and $99 per concurrent user for
their enterprise product. They were purchased by Quest software last year
so they are doing very well right now. I wouldn't worry about them going
out of business any time soon.

I've experimented a bit but have not had any luck getting microphone
redirection to work with windows server 2008. I've found little on the
web about this...does anyone know of a good resource? I enabed audio
redirection on both sides (as far as I could tell), but the local
microphone is not getting to the server, and I don't see any evidence of
a virutal sound driver, my recording attempt came up with "unable to
start sound device".

I've still not heard anything from provision.

Re: Windows 2008 in TS role, no sound devices?

Sorry I should have said straight TS does not support bi-directional audio.
You need PRovision, Citrix, etc for that functionality.

Re: Windows 2008 in TS role, no sound devices?

If you'd like you can contact me directly about Provision. I am a reseller
for them if you need to get something from then.
