Getting New PC with Windows Vista 64 bit

What is best way to get data and programs from my old PC to a new one
with Vista. The only extra items I have on the old PC are an HP C6280
printer and a Logitech camera ,keyboard and mouse. I may use the new
keyboard and mouse that comes with the new system. My Old PC has Windows XP
Home.

Data can be burned to a CD and copied from there.

Pre-installed programs on the XP system can't be moved over. Installation
requires the original installation media i.e. CD/DVD..

Before you attempt to migrate the applications, which is otherwise just a
matter of reinstalling them, you need to verify that they actually work on
Vista 64. The same goes for the hardware.

Copying data is really quite a straightforward task of copying. Locate the
data on the old system, find where you want to put it on the new one, and
copy the files and folders over. You can use a number of methods for this,
I usually use a network connection or a USB2 drive adapter or case.

Locate and install Microsoft Vista "upgrade" advisor tool. It will /
should scan your PC to tell which hardware can be updated during a
Vista upgrade. This will give you some help.

As for the products you mention, check with the manufacturer's web
site. A lot of XP compatible hardware will have to be "scraped"
because no Vista drivers will ever exist.

Should be "scrapped." There is a lot of still "functional" hardware
that will never work in Vista since there will never be any compatible
drivers.

Ran the Vista upgrade advisor tool and it said there are no compatibility
problems upgrading to Vista.
How accurate is this tool?

There is no way to get most common, registry based programs from an old
pc to a new one. One has to install the "heavy" programs to the new pc
yet again. They cross your fingers you dont have to get an upgrade of
your apps.

Yes there is. Laplink's PC Mover does a pretty good job (at least over
here). Saved me a LOT of time, too. But a very *few* apps had to be
"reinstalled".
