IS THIS A HOPELESS CASE FOR SERVICE PACK 2? PLEASE HELP

Hi, I'm back with a new problem. Hope you can help me with this one too.
I have a Dell 4600 xp that had sevice pack 1 on it. I have tried to install
service pack 2, 3 different times, with no luck. I finally decided to try it
again and it seemed to be doing ok until it got hung up at the end where it
was doing clean-up. I think it was in clean-up at least an hour. anyway it
finally came up and said that the install failed. I rebooted my computer and
it was there. It is also in my add-remove in the control panel. It was giving
me problems, so I rebooted in safe mode to do a system restore. All that was
there were service pack restore points, so I picked the bottom one and did a
restore. I really had no choice because I couldn't even use my computer with
an hour glass that would not let me navigate anywhere. Anyway, the restore
seems to be working fine now. I am not able to use wordpad or the calculator,
but other than that I have not had any problems. I decided to check my event
viewer and saw several problems. I have no idea if they are major or can be
fixed. I am hoping fixed because I really need this service pack, If not I
can go to add-remove and hopefully remove it. I am posting below the errors
that showed in the event viewer. It would probably be better to scroll to the
bottom of these and work your way to the top, as that would be in the right

The performance counter name string value in the registry is incorrectly
formatted. The bogus string is 3096, the bogus index value is the first DWORD
in Data section while the last valid index values are the second and third
DWORD in Data section.

already?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you
attempted to install WinXP SP2?

Is WinXP SP2 listed in Add/Remove Programs?

The reason service Pack2 wasn't installed before now
is not from lack of trying. The first time I tried was at least 3 yrs ago ,
I tried again about 2 yrs ago and it crashed my system. Tried again last
year, all these failed. This time I actually have it on my system, but with
errors. Yes it is in add-remove now. I turned off All my security programs
before I installed it this time. My programs are Avast free, Online Armor,
Winpatrol and Malwarebytes. I use explorer 6 and Firefox 3.

It is never a good idea to undo/uninstall a Service Pack using System
Restore.

Seeing as you've had so many issues for so very long, if you cannot
uninstall WinXP SP2 via Add/Remove Programs, cut your losses: Format &
reinstall Windows.

NB: A Repair Install will NOT help and would probably make things worse.

Good luck.

PS: If the Clean Install gives you WinXP SP1, skip SP2 and install SP3 and
all post-SP3 updates instead.

Do you have a winxp cd or only a restore disk?
Are you able to run the system File checker? - see win help

First run disk cleanup, then defrag
Ensure any external devices are disconnected.
Are you able to run ms update when booted into safe mode, then install the
any updates in batches of say 10, earliest first, then reboot.
If all successfull, repeat the process, in batches of 10
Dont forget to set a restore point first, then after each successful boot,
before you proceed to the next batch.

Did Dell tell you to install an update to the BIOS? My 4700 required an
update.
Before starting the update process, did you make certain that your computer
was ready for SP2? There is a Knowledge Base article which discusses the
steps that one must take before installing SP2.
I installed SP2 on my computer in August of 2005, and it has run quite well
since then.

RE: IS THIS A HOPELESS CASE FOR SERVICE PACK 2? PLEASE HELP

I have a reinstallation CD that came with my computer. Do I do updates in
safe mode...can I still get online when in safemode? I haven't done updates
yet because I didn't know if I could get these errors fixed. If I start
having problems, I will have to try uninstalling the service pack, so I won't
need the updates. No, I didn't update the BIO...didn't know about that.
Should have researched this more first. Another thought....if I installed
service 3, would that fix all these errors?

Fix all err's; who knows?
If as the other poster states Dell has a reccommended bios update you should
impliment this by visiting the dell support site and entering your Tag#
You will likely get a list of reccommnded/critical updates for bios and
Drivers
do this before attempting a ms update, and yes safe mode has a connection
option
