Norton360 -v- Defender

Windows Defender doesn't recognise Norton360 antivirus on my new system.
Symantec suggested turning Defender off. That doesn't sound like good advice
to this novice. Can anyone advise me please.

There's no particular reason that Windows Defender would have any need
to "recognize" any anti-virus product; it serves an entirely different
purpose. Windows Defender serves to protect the computer against
ad-ware and spy-ware, not viruses.

I apologise. I wasn't clear. On my Desktop PC Windows Security Centre tells
me I have no anti-virus protection while Norton360 tells me that I do. My
laptop has the same O/S (Windows Vista) and the same security (Norton360) yet
it doesn't give me the same message. Symantec suggests turning off Windows
defender, is that a good idea?

I don't see how turning off Defender would help, but Norton 360 claims
to provide the same sort of protection, so it shouldn't hurt to try it.
If it does no good, you can always re-enable Defender.
