I have a windows 2003 domain controller that is running dhcp if I rename the
server from server x02 to say x05 any issues with DHCP service? will all the
desktops\laptops continue to get their info from the renamed sever?

Re: DHCP and server rename

DHCP servers have to be authorized before they will serve the information.
See:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325473/en-us

There is a section on how to authorize the server.

Re: DHCP and server rename

Hello narnold33,

Is this the only DC in your domain? Then i would strongly recommend to create
and test a backup before starting.

I think you have to reauthorize the server. Personally i would move the DHCP
database to another DC and also all other services, if used, also the 5 FSMO
roles if this machine is the holder of them. Make it as safe as possible
for the renaming phase.

Best regards

No there are two other domain controllers in the domain, all have dns
installed also. I think I should be okay

Re: DHCP and server rename

You will have to dcpromo it down to a member server, rename it, promote it
back to a DC and authorize it.

Re: DHCP and server rename

the domain\forest functional level is set for windows 2003 I believe with
that you can use netdom.exe to rename domain controllers without having to
use dcpromo. Let me know if I'm not correct on that. Thanks

Re: DHCP and server rename

Yea you can use that to rename the DC. Worst case would be that the rename
bombs because it *might* check and see DHCP installed. DHCP relies on the
server name for authorization. In this case you would just demote, rename,
promote and authorize. If it doesn't check and the rename succeeds, you
still may have to reauthorize the server for DHCP.

Never tried the rename tool so I can't really tell you what to expect. You
could set up a "box" as a DC in the domain with DHCP and use that as a test.
