XP Upgrade from Win 98

I recently had my Desk Top PC's Mother Bd. Burn up. I'm looking at a whole
new system but I do not want to purchase a new operating system. The
suppliers are telling me I'll have to purchase the full version of XP or
Vista (yuck) because the new interfaces within the PC for the periphiles are
not supported by Win 98. I have the Upgrade version of XP and had no problem
converting my old PC from Win 98 to XP but how would I do this with a New PC
that does not use the old ribbon cables to the Hard drive and CD reader??

I have to first load Win 98 the upgrade to XP?

If you don't buy a computer already set up with the operating system,
YOU will be responsible for getting all the drivers working properly.
Provided you are ready to do that, boot from the XP CD and insert the 98
CD when it asks for the qualifying operating system.

No, you don't need to install Win98 first. You will put the XP install CD in
and start the installation. Very quickly the installer will say that it
can't find a qualifying operating system and ask you to put your older
operating system CD in the drive. You'll put in your Win98 disk (can't be
an OEM restore disk though, it needs to be a real Win98/ME install CD).
After the installer checks it, you'll then be asked to put the XP install
CD back in the drive.

Although upgrades usually go smoothly, it would be extremely foolish not to
have all your data backed up onto removable media first.

If you don't want to purchase a new OS, this is actually hard to do;
generally you need to buy components and build the system yourself. From a
major vendor, this will likely cost more because they can't test it the same
way as any other system.

I would suggest another tactic. You can find very good used XP Pro systems
for under $300. I recently purchased a couple of 3gHz HP desktop systems
wth 2 gig RAM and 40 gig hard disks for around $200 each (no monitor). I
expect these systems to run for several more years with no trouble at all.

I would also suggest that you consider shifting to a new hard disk, as
drives do have a limited life span.

I believe XP will ask you for the 98 cd during install if there is not a
qualifying install on the hard drive.

The only hazard I can see is if the new PC has SATA drives. I doubt you'll
be able to find SATA drivers for Win98.

Can not the XP Upgrade CD read the Win98 disk during the upgrade
qualification check?

Any SATA drivers for Win98 (and I don't see how there could be any since I
don't think SATA was around then, although I could be wrong) would be for
Win98 and not XP and therefore useless.
