hello all:

Recently running into probem with cdrw drive. It is not recognizing any of
recorded / or even fresh cdrw discs. Only response upon insertion of any
disc and attempt is made to access contents: "please insert disc" etc.

Recently I have begun using CC Cleaner to clean out invalid reg entries and
other stuff. Have run regscan with no errors showing. Have been using
Roxio Easy CD Creator - reinstalled same. Also tried removing cdrw drive in
Device Mgr - but after deleting drive and re-starting windows there is no
notice of new hardware found when re-booting.

Has registry cleaner somehow screwed up communication between drive and
system - ?
Is it just a drive failure? Drive opens /function light is amber - accepts
cdrw disc / light goes grn hear a whir - then goes dark and although drive
is again present in device mgr - it does not read any disc.

Help?
I do have an older Plextor cdrw and thinking of installing ?
Suggestions?
Thnx.
Barry

Quite possibly but equally possible is that the drive has simply failed,
not uncommon for a machine running Win Me which might suggest a drive that
is 5 or more years old.

If you boot to DOS using a Win Me boot floppy is the drive detected and
can you "see" the contents of a data disk such as a Win Me install disk
when using the DOS DIR command?

Mike's suggestion seems correct. I recommend CCleaner for removing stubborn
programs in their entirety. As a registry cleaner, not a good idea.

Re: cdrw drive not active in Windows ME system P-4 1300 w rambus 768 mb memory

Hi Mike:

Able to boot to DOS. Chose option with CD support and a drive letter was
assigned to my CD drive. Using the DOS command C:\WINDOWS DIR was able to
get a listing of content of that folder. Similarly able to get a list of
content of A:\DIR - a breakdown of files on floppy boot disc. But - could
not get any info from E:\DIR. Only an error message. Previously recorded
info was on a CDRW in that drive and I also tried a cd disc with previously
recorded data - also got error notice.
Does this mean more likely problem is with the drive as opposed to Operating
System?

thanks again.

Barry,

In a word, yes. At this point I'd be shopping for a replacement drive.
Fortunately they're cheap nowadays unlike a few years ago and a
replacement is likely to also be faster. When shopping make sure that you
buy a drive that uses the correct interface for your system which for
older machines is more likely to be IDE/ATAPI rather than the newer SATA.
